Prayers requested: Baby stopped breathing

We got a call from Jake's daycare that he'd stopped breathing for a little bit and gone blue. They got him to start breathing again, but they still advised we take him to the doctor to get checked out. We took him and he started acting like normal and vitals looked good so we were sent home. We got two minutes from home and I saw taht he stopped breathing and went pale and blue, so we high-tailed it back to the doctor's. Since he'd done it twice in a short period of time, doctor wanted him admitted to the hospital for observation and to run some tests.

Suffice it to say, I'm one scared and stressed mommy! He seems to be acting normally now, but just knowing this thing could happen twice in one day...just scares me to think of what could have happened if his teacher hadn't been holding him or if I hadn't been sitting in the backseat with him on the way home. Your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thanks, ladies. Doc preliminarily thinks it may be pertussis. He's had his boosters, but he apparently could have still contracted it somehow. Labs haven't come back yet, but I'm praying that's it so we can treat it and be done. It's gonna be a long night. Jake appears to be sleeping comfortably, but it's nearly impossible for me to relax when I'm bolting upright to check on him if I don't hear him snore for a few seconds.

Doctor just gave me the news that Jake tested positive for RSV, a respiratory infection contracted by nearly all children by age 2. It can, but does not always, cause episodes of apnea. The only downside is there's no medication for it, his body has to clear it out. The doctor may order a breathing treatment tonight to attempt to clear out his bronchia a little bit.

It's just a relief to finally have an answer!

  • So sorry to read this!! My son had RSV at 7 days old. We literally left the hospital for two days and ended back in the ICU for a week. I was in children's so got so much info on it. I usually lasts 5 days peaking at day three - five. Has he had a cold for a few days? If so it might have peaked and you might be through the worst. My son also stopped breathing. They thought he caught it from someone visiting in the hospital! Good luck! I always found comfort knowing it was a virus and would go away but I don't think I slept for months !!!

Yes, he's had some congestion for about the past week or so. I hope you're right about the worst being over. Doc says he should be okay to return to daycare next week, so he may be thinking the same thing.

For some good news, Jake has been discharged and is now resting comfortably at home with Daddy and Grampa (my dad is retired so he came up to help out and will be staying with us through the weekend). So relieved. Now for this work day to be over so I can go home and hold him!

  • How scary!  I am praying for y'all.  Do you have an Angelcare monitor or can you get one?  That might help give you some piece of mind while he recovers.  I hope he gets well soon!

Thanks, Bliss! Yes, we have an AngelCare monitor. I've always been paranoid about breathing issues, so we got one when he was a couple of weeks old. It goes off about once a night due to him just wiggling off the pad, so my heart drops a bit these days for just a second.

The funny thing is I probably feel way worse than he does. Since that third attack Monday night, he's been acting like himself. I doubt he ever thought anything was wrong. Thank goodness for that.
