Multiples

A little late but my twins have arrived!

At 312p (central) on Monday, June 24th I welcomed my di/di, b/g twins via c-section at 35 weeks and 6 days. Pretty amazing, even with the c-section that they both came out within the same minute. Coincidentally, they were also both 4lbs1oz. Small but mighty.

We went in for regular appointments Monday morning and I didn't get to leave until Friday.  The first check-up went just fine. There didn't seem to be anything to be concerned about. It was the growth scan that caused concern. The babies hadn't grown much since their previous scan. They were either running out of room or not getting what they needed to grow. I was sent back to discuss moving up my scheduled c-section. We originally had it scheduled for July 11th which would have been 38 weeks and 3 days. The clinic considers 38 weeks the cut off with twins and will schedule induction within a few days of that. I however, needed to have the c-section because E, who was considered "baby 1" which would mean the first out, was breech since 24 weeks. It was just not a possibility to try to deliver her that way.

The new date they gave me was July 1st which would have been 36 weeks 6 days but they wanted to do a little monitoring while I was there. They tracked heart rates of each baby plus contractions I was having. Both heart rates were great but E's was not responding to simulation when they wanted it to increase. That was enough concern for the doctors to decide it was just time. They assured us that they did not consider it an emergency situation, but they also did not feel comfortable with sending me home and waiting a week.

Originally I was told that E would be born first since she was breech but during surgery, they were just in a position where L was first out. My H was happy that his little boy could now be the "big brother".

They spent 29 days in the NICU but got to go home together.  It was a long and difficult road during the NICU time.  We found out three days after they were born that E probably had Down Syndrome.  That was confirmed by a blood chromosomal test and we got the positive result one week after they were born.  That was a huge shock to us considering all of our First Trimester screening said everything was normal and we had a 1 in 7500ish and 1 in 8900ish change of DS.  However, health wise she exceeded all expectations.  There was worry about her heart and digestive tract since those are the two main health concerns with DS.  Her fetal echo was great, nothing to worry about and she didn't show any cause for concern about her digestive tract.  Now we just have to work with her as she gets older and develops but at least we don't have the health issues to worry about.  L is a strong healthy boy.  He was very colicky during month two.  He cried a lot in that second month (first month home) but in the past two weeks he's turned a new leaf.  He can be awake and quiet and content, where just a few weeks ago we didn't think that was possible.

I am absolutely blessed to have my twins and cannot wait to watch them grow!

  • @pea-kay , thanks for following!  There toward the end I was too tired and cranky to want to pose for pictures.  Then when the babes arrived I just couldn't find time to write anything.  I will get back to it eventually, I am sure.
