My son is six and I am looking for a good spelling program to start with him. He is reading at a first grade level, if that makes a difference in your recommendation.
Look into Words Their Way. Search online for "words their way primary spelling inventory." it's a developmental spelling test that will show you what letter-sound relationships he knows. You will then know his spelling stage and can order a book of word lists with supported activities to meet his current needs. Scoring the inventory can be complicated, but it's worth it in my opinion.

I just bought A Reason for Spelling. I really like A Reason for Handwriting, so thought I'd try this, since I wanted a spelling curriculum for my 6 year old first grader. It has pretty good reviews, so I'm hopeful it will work here.
