When is a first ultrasound??

Went to get a blood test last friday to confirm and all is well!!!! Im about 5 weeks. But i didnt see a doctor! I feel like im googleing what to do and not to do....shouldnt my doc help me with that. The nurse told me my first appontment would be at 8-10weeks....that all normal???

Re: When is a first ultrasound??

  • I think it all depends on the doctor. Most doctors only do the first appt around 9 weeks. My doctor will do an ultrasound on that day to confirm the pregnancy.

With my last pregnancy I felt like the doctor was only there to answer questions. I did my own research. Which I guess is a good sign that nothing was wrong.

  • It depends on your office's policies, but that sounds about normal.  I knew when ttc that once I got a BFP I wouldn't have an apt until I was 8-9 weeks along.  I got my BFP on 9/7 and my first apt will be on 10/7 when I will be 7w6d.

  • I am a little bummed on this one. For 1st pregnancy I got a nurse meeting with bloodwork and they gave me packets of info.

2nd pregnancy they make you wait until ultrasound appt. But they did let me scheduled for 8 weeks. At least that means I won't have to hold the beans until 9+ weeks.

In my mind the ultrasound is the "ok, all is good. go shouting from the rooftops".

  • 8 wks is pretty normal unless youve suffered a loss, then they typically will follow a little closer.  The waiting can be torture though I know!!  H&H 9 mos to you.
  • That's normal around here. I got an earlier appointment for my pregnancy with DS but only because I'd had spotting. Otherwise they had me coming in only at 11 weeks. For this pregnancy, I haven't even called for an appointment yet.

  • I called today to see when my doc wanted me in. I'm 4.5 weeks right now. My appt will be at 5w5d. Is that too soon? They said they would give me an u/s slip and I could go anytime including that day. Should I wait longer? How many weeks should I be?

  • The earlier you go, less shows up on the U/S. At 6w2d, I was able to see baby and HB with DS. Just had an U/S at 5 weeks and only saw sac.

  • At my doctor, you go first at around 7 weeks for a "pregnancy education" meeting, and then around 9 weeks they do the first ultrasound.

  • Perfectly normal. With my first I didn't have an ultrasound until my NT at 13 weeks. I did see my GP once for initial blood work and then my OB at 10 weeks but that visit was just to tell me what to expect appointment wise and he asked if I had any questions. I do have a dating ultrasound this time around only because I'm still breast feeding and my cycle is a little wonky! Often the ladies who have early/frequent appointment do so because they have a history with loss and require a little extra monitoring.
