Pregnant after 35

Can't Sleep!

You would think with all the exhaustion at the end of the day, that I would sleep like a log at night.  WRONG!!!  I'm 9 weeks pregnant, so it's obviously not a belly issue.  I do get up at least twice a night to go to the bathroom, but I am also up almost every 2 hours.  Anyone else have this problem?  Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get into a nice deep sleep tonight?

Re: Can't Sleep!

  • Many people take Unisom (and b-6, although I'm not sure if it's the combo or not) because it helps with nausea.

FWIW, I noticed I was waking up between bathroom trips as well; while I didn't feel the urge to pee, I found if got up and used the restroom, I felt much better and was able to fall back to sleep much more quickly. It might be worth a try!

I was also waking up thirsty and for a while, denied myself because I didn't want to pee more; I've been giving in to my thirst in the middle of the night lately, and I don't think it increases the number of times I go.

  • Unisom worked pretty well for me during the 1st trimester. Good luck!

  • You could try Benadryl - it's safe in pregnancy and works for me every time.

  • i'm allowed to take 25mg regular Benadryl for night-time breathing difficulty (Yay, pregnancy congestion) and it has a nice perk of helping me sleep..
I don't know of a good home-remedy for pregnancy insomnia.
I have been allowed to take Unisom in previous pregnancies as it helps with nausea as well. Haven't got to that point yet this go around.

hope you get some good sleep soon!

  • I feel ya. I've gone through phases with the sleep difficulty, it will get better for awhile then worse again. Sometimes it's hip or back pain that wakes me up, sometimes I have to pee and sometimes it's just plain insomnia.

I was very cautious about taking anything in first tri due to my history of early losses. I was already taking meds for my nausea and it made me very uncomfortable. I would usually get up and sit at the computer awhile then try going back to bed. In second tri I woke up hungry a lot so I would eat something then go back to bed. In both cases I was usually able to get back to sleep after being up for a little while. I also agree with the occasional thirst theory. If I let myself stay thirsty it's harder to get back to sleep.

Now that I'm in third tri if I have a really bad night I will take a Benadryl. Doesn't always get me a full night's sleep but helps tremendously. I just have so much general discomfort now and it's hard to find a good position.

One other tip I can give you is that if you are battling constipation do all you can to deal with it. It makes the discomfort worse and that much harder to sleep. Good luck!
