Home with DD today

I discovered white sores inside her mouth yesterday and waiting to hear back from the doc about an appt, otherwise we're going to urgent care. Then, as I was doing her hair this morning I found lice. So we both got a good Nix shampooing and all the bedding is downstairs waiting to be washed. Ugh, first lice encounter, I'm not a fan. Anyone have any good preventative measures? I heard coconut prevents them as they don't like the smell

Re: Home with DD today

  • Sorry about the lice issue.  My daughter picked up lice 2x in 2nd grade.  I found that what worked even better than the lice shampoo was coating her entire head in vaseline.  It smothers live bugs and eggs.  And not to mention, makes it 100x easier to comb out the eggs.

To get vaseline out of hair?  Coat the hair in flour, and then wash out with Dawn dish soap (or any other degreaser soap).  After I did that, she didn't have any more ..... Of course, not only did I wash every stitch of clothing, bedding, or other thing that could be safely thrown in the washer and dryer, I also sprayed the lice spray all over my carpet, furniture and uncovered pillows.  Then I vacuumed the crap out of my house numerous times and immediately dumped the remnants.

Lice is a hell of a lot of work.  I was exhausted afterward.  But creepy crawlies gross me out so bad that I couldn't handle it.

Also, another trick to be sure you've gotten all the eggs, straighten your daughter's hair.  The heat from the straightener will kill them.

  • Wrap every soft surface she has come in contact with in big black trash bags and tie them up for 24 hours in the sun (you want the inside of the bags to get hot).  Then immediately put everything in the washer and dryer on high heat.  That kills any lice and eggs on your cushions, blankets, clothes etc. and help prevent re-infestation.  Use a lice removal spray on carpets and vacuum several times with a new bag/filter that you will later throw away.  Repeat the hair treatment (one is never enough) and check every day for eggs.   It sucks to have lice but if you catch it early and treat aggressively it wont be as bad.
