kitchen question

A long long time ago I asked about what would be most important to you when buying a house. We have decided to completely remodel our kitchen in the spring since it will greatly increase our home value and it seems to be #1 on what everyone wants. Our goal right now is to move in about 2 years.

We are going to get an Ikea kitchen when they have the next big sale, I think they have it twice a year and one just ended. Anyways, we are starting to make the plan and it is a toss up between a breakfast bar or large pantry cabinet. We currently just use cupboard space, there is no separate pantry.. and there will be a lot of cupboard space, but I am thinking people may like an actual pantry cabinet. Our kitchen is a U shape and right now we have an awkward peninsula and the other option is doing something similar and making it into more of a breakfast bar. The dining room is also right off the kitchen so the bar kind of separates the 2 spaces, which may not be a big deal. I don't know. We don't know what potential buyers would want more. I would assume space for food, but I have heard a lot of people loving the bar space too. What would you rather have?

Also, anything else you would like in a new kitchen? Or look for when buying a home?

Re: kitchen question

  • I would not buy a house without a pantry.

  • Pantry, if it's a choice between the two. Breakfast bars are nice, but food storage is pretty essential.
  • I have a house without a pantry...which is why my Home board on Pinterest is filled with tons of pictures of HUGE pantries. It is the worst. I actually have one in the rental house, but the house we own doesn't have one and it sucked for all those years!
  • Basically there was food out on my counter half the time bc we didn't have one. Ugh.
  • Id rather have the breakfest bar. My parents house has a island in there kitchen and its were we all have always hung out, eat, play cards, whatever.
We dont have a pantry now and its fine.
  • I would much rather have a pantry.

  • I'd want a pantry. A breakfast bar would be nice but IMO a pantry is necessary!

  • As long as there is enough cabinet space, I'd say breakfast bar. We have one but no pantry and it's fine. We have never used out dining room table because we always use the island. We hang around there all the time. We have plenty of cabinet space though. Plus, we have a room in our finished basement where we keep some food
  • I would choose a pantry over a breakfast bar.

  • We have an island/breakfast bar and while I love it, I wish I had an actual pantry IN the kitchen. We converted a closet into one but it's in a different room which is a PITA.

  • We turned this weird desk/cabinet area in our kitchen into a big pantry cabinet when we updated it right before moving in, and I swear I don't know how we lived in an apartment for so long without one.  I would 100% prefer this over a breakfast bar.
