When have you called the police?

Im in a story mood and the post below made me wonder

First time I talked to the cops was when my dad came home on my mom packing to leave him. My mom called 911, threw the phone into my room and locked the door. He lost it and got hauled off jail. I was 10 or 11.

The first time I called the cops I was driving home from school and saw a little boy come flying out of a moving vehicle going maybe 20mph. I dont know if he was pushed or jumped but either way, something going on in that car. Never found out what happened.

Last year, my husband was in a really dark place. I couldnt get a hold of him after he hinted at suicide so I called in a well check. I was staying at my moms an hour away and literally broke my truck driving there I was going so fast. It wasnt a good night, but everything turned out fine.

Re: When have you called the police?

  • I called when I saw a pair of kids (looked to be around eight or nine, but I was driving fast) riding bikes along the northway (65 mph highway in NY). It terrified me.

I also called once when I came around a corner on a small highway to find lumber all over the road.

Oh, and I called when my friend's abusive ex called and told her he was killing himself.

  • I called when I came home and my house was ransacked and my dog beaten.

I called when there was a group of 20ish teenagers randomly hanging out in my front yard.

DH called when he saw some guy try to break into his truck on our security camera.

I called when we were driving home from Thanksgiving behind a VERY drunk driver.

I used to call all the time when I was a kid because people crashed in front of my house on a weekly basis.

  • I have never had an emergency situation to call but I called the non-emergency hot line because I needed animal control...once because a wolf came in our yard and killed almost all our livestock and once for s stray dog that was too scared to catch.

I also called the non emergency line once because there was a group of kids at the park throwing rocks at cars driving by.

  • I called when we were living in an apartment and I heard my neighbors arguing fiercely (not at all uncommon) and then I heard banging/crashing and the woman screaming "holy shit you broke my nose." Police came and she refused to press any charges (paper thin walls...). It was awful. They fought all the time.

  • We call for suspicious vehicles in our neighborhood ALL the time. We have lived her long enough and know all the neighbors--and since we were robbed 2 years ago, we are on high alert for suspicious looking cars.

  • I forgot about when I broke down on the freeway in a heat wave (104) with my baby in the car. We sat in a highway patrol's car for 40 minutes waiting for a tow truck.

  • Some douchebag was threatening his girlfriend at a bar, so my mom and I had a few choice words with him.  He then threatened my mom, so we called the cops as he drove off three sheets to the wind.  He was popped with a DUI.

  • We call frequently for suspicious people/ vehicles in our neighborhood. I call if I even get a bad vibe. We live in a high crime area (40 break ins and 3 people killed just this summer) and get very few patrol calls, so our neighborhood watch suggests to call if we feel like anything is off. Before I lived in this neighborhood, I had never called.

  • When I was 6 and my mom's boyfriend came home out of his mind on meth. He busted into my room trying to choke her, she had a kitchen knife in her hand. He was so high he grabbed the knife by the blade and bent it. I ran into the living room and called 911. They hand to break down our locked front door to get in.

After he posted bail he came back to all of his clothes on our porch. He set them on fire and left a bible verse pinned to the door.

    Fun times.
  • We had done crazy neighbors downstairs that thought 3 am was the perfect time to beat each other. We didn't call until one time it was so bad that they started throwing stuff out the window. Including their TV. After the cops left that night they threatened to kill us.
We got a restraining order and moved 3 months later.

  • I called when I was about 14 or 15. My step dad(deceased) was drinking heavily then and attacked my mother. Pretty scary times back then.
  • I never called as a child. I should have a lot of times.

I called when some drunk asshole ran his company vehicle into my car (in my drive way) at 3 in the morning. He tried to get his car started and then bailed on foot. I'd already swore at him and took his picture... the cops found him right away. This was in the nicer neighborhood we could afford to rent in, but not ever dream of buying in.

    Now for my current hood:

DH's 30th birthday party was interrupted by gun shots down the street. Some kid came limping by screaming, "I can't walk! I've been shot!". So we offered to call the cops for him. And if you "can't walk" then why don't you stop walking away from us. Turns out it was a drug deal gone bad.

Someone shot the back window of my Tahoe out.

While stopped at a red light, when DS was 8 wks old, some random douche bag jumped out of his car and beat the shit out of our car. Kicked the driver's door, tried his hardest at breaking the window, kicked and punched the tailgate. It was crazy scary. Douche's friend got Douche back in their car and explained, "Sorry. He's drunk." Uh.... I don't give a shit if he's drunk! That fuckface just cause $1700 worth of damage (per insurance payment) for no fucking reason.

    More gunshots.

  • Idk that I've ever called the cops. I use 911 a lot because my mom has a chronic illness and I sometimes can't help her so I have to call paramedics and ambulance.
I almost called a couple times because I heard gunshot at midnight and I was afraid to let my dog out but I saw the patrol car coming down my road (someone else had probably already called) so I just went out and talked to him because I know most of the patrol guys. (I did a lot of job shadows with my police station in high school.)

  • I've only called once (non emergency line) when a bunch of teenagers were partying in the pkg lot of my condo at like midnight. While I was on the line a cruiser pulled up and the cop on the phone was like "how's that for service?". Someone else must have already called it in.

  • Wow. I only thought we lived in a rough area...
We called once when I heard somebody go into or come out of our greenhouse one night (I have no idea why somebody would do that).

One day I was outside gardening, and a man drove up in a car and stopped at the end of my driveway. He got out, walked around the car acting like he was trying to find better service on his cell. But there's like, no way he could have lost service right there. I thought maybe he was taking pictures or something, but I don't know why.
A day or two later, the same guy came on an ATV and stopped in the same place. He did the same cell phone thing. I was super freaked out so I called.

Once we were driving at night around 9pm. There were two teenagers lying in the road, and I'd have ran them over if they'd been on my side.
We called 911, cause that's just plain stupid and dangerous.

We've called the non emergency number regarding loose horses and donkeys. Our neighbors wouldn't get a decent fence. The animals would just stand there in the road. I was just waiting for somebody to come through and hit them.

We've called a few times when we were behind somebody driving erratically, thinking that they may be drunk.

Once we witnessed a wreck, but it wasn't bad. We were way back on a dirt road with no cell service, so we had to drive around the two cars and borrow somebody's land line.

I mean, we hear gunshots all the time, but that is a normal thing for this area. Georgia, y'all.

I can't think of anything else...

  • A few times I've called the non emergency number for noise at my old complex.

A few times I've calle when I pulled up to accidents. Twice I've pulled up to flipped cars that rolled several times. Both drivers were intoxicated.

  • I've called more than I like.

I used to work in a gas station while in HS. At least once a month a car on fire would pull in. I would just call the non-emergency line and go put it out with the fire extinguisher except every now and then some asshole would pull the burning vehicle up to the pump (because it is always a bright idea to put fire as close as you can get it to gasoline). Then I would have to hit the emergency shut off valve and call 911. Fun times.

I called because some guy pulled a 10" kitchen knife on an old guy for cutting him off at the pump, same fun HS job. They came into the station to bitch to me, like my little 16 yo self is going to get involved.

I have called for accidents many times. Most often when at said gas station someone would come in and ask me to call because there were injuries. The station was next to a freeway. I usually didn't see the accident (this was in the days before cells were common, yes I am old).

I called because I saw a drunk hit a brick wall at 60 mph. The car was totaled but he was able to stagger away amongst all the beer cans that fell out of his car.

Last time was a bad head on. We thought one person died (don't know for certain) and another was very seriously injured. His girl friend was following him in her car and saw the whole thing. I took her to the hospital after the ambulance.

I called for a drunk that was going all over the road about 5 mph. This was a mountain road with a 100 cliff on one side and a straight wall on the other that would guarantee that someone coming around the bend on the other side would hit him head on or go into the mountain. He ended up stopping blocking both lanes when he passed out at the wheel.

I called while giving the police a blow by blow as I watched from my apartment window in college at 3am someone crow bar my car door open and steal my stereo. Police took forever to get there and the got away clean, and managed to do $2000 damage to the door, roof and dashboard of the car.

I called when some kids were ding dong ditching us. When DH went out to tell them enough, one of them dropped their 6 in. knife. They came back 15 minutes later totally crying and begging for their knife back. Their dad had given it to them for Boy Scouts. We walked them back to their parents, told them what their kids were up to and gave the knife to the parents. Told the cops what happened.

I called when someone was going through mailboxes on our street and stealing outgoing mail. Sherriffs had the helicopter out looking for that guy, but he got away. The neighbor didn't cancel her checking account (even though we told her what happened) and the made new checks with her account number off her gas payment and cleaned her out. Took her forever to get it all straightened.

I am sure there is more, but this is all I can think of.

  • Oh, we called for a loud 2 am party on a Thursday. Because we have become what we used to hate.

  • I've only called the cops twice. Once to start the ball on getting a restraining order against a crazy chick we used to hang out with. She sent me nasty text messages all day, saying she was going to bash my face in and break my fingers because I asked for my things back. So I callled for a restraining order.

The other time was because my GP was off for a few weeks and my parents left me home alone with him (I was 20+ weeks pregnant). He had been having stokes but refused to be seen by a doc. Well he drank himself silly and had another stroke. So I got freaked out and called the police since he sounded violent. Scary stuff.

  • Once when there was a guy passed out in his car at an intersection as I was trying to turn into work.  Everyone was honking and going around him but when I drove by he was clearly leaned back totally unconscious.  I pulled into the parking lot and called but didn't stick around to see what happened.

I once had to call 911 for my mom when she had a bad reaction to some pain medication she was taking for kidney stones.  That was scary.  I was around 10 or 11 and my dad was with her in the bathroom and told me to call.

Finally, we called once when we were in a Wal-Mart and an employee had a seizure right in front of us.  The manager didn't know if she had a condition or not so and wasn't exactly in a rush to do anything so I called.

  • Someone rear ended me and drove off.

    Erratic driving.

I saw a 2-3 year old girl in a car driving with no carseat or seatbelt waving at me out the rear window.

Cars bein broken into by our house.

I also worked at a gas station in college and got robbed at 11pm once. The guy was out of his mind on something and told me he had a knife although I didn't see it. I was the only one working. I have him EVERYTHING. He actually told me he liked me cause I was so amenable to his requests. My boss was a douche who had no emergency button or cameras so I wasn't getting knifed trying to be a hero. The cops came quickly and drove me home.

  • I've called 911 a couple of times that I remember.

Once when I was 12-ish and had stayed home sick from school.  I was in the basement watching tv when I noticed a bunch of people walking through the driveway into the backyard.  I couldn't get in touch with my parents and I was scared to go upstairs and see what was going on so I called 911.  Turns out they were there to cut a tree down but no one had mentioned that to me.  I was so embarassed because several cars showed up and all the neighbors were watching.

I called when we came home to find our neighbors house being robbed--in the middle of the day.

I called when the college kids who rent across the street kicked over 100 people out of their house and they were screaming and fighting in the street.

I've called non-emergency a few times for things like cars getting broken into.

  • I have witnessed two car accidents that I both called in and then helped out with what I could.

My next door neighbor, in an apartment with very thin walls, was knocking his gf around.  It actually ended with him being kicked out of the complex all together.

Following a very old driver whose car was leaking gas all over the place.

When my current neighbors were screaming it out on their front lawn and he threw a piece of pottery at her head.

When our office Temp had a seizure.

  • I was about 10 the first time I called. I walked in on a fight between my mom and dad. Dad was drunk, on top of my mom, and was choking her. He got arrested.

The second time I called on myBFF's mom. She was beating her up, throwing things at her, calling her all kinds of names. She was strung out, and arrested on the spot.

The last time was last year when we had a fire works ban statewide, and our jackass neighbor was lighting off fire works. We had just had a huge devastating fire.

  • I called 911 once when I was 17 because a man broke into our house, unplugged the phone line and crawled into my mom's bedroom. Luckily, she was a light sleeper and heard him scooting across the carpet and thought it was my then-boyfriend looking for my cat. So she called out, "(boyfriend's name), the cat is not under my bed." This must have scared him, thinking there was another male in the house, because he got up, literally "roared" at my mom, and left through the back door.

I called when my husbands truck was stolen from a store parking lot.

When an elderly woman drove her car straight into a light pole in front of our house.

When I came home from work to find our house had been robbed, and everything that had any value whatsoever was gone. They even flipped all our mattresses looking for stuff!
  • 1) I had a houseparty when I was like 17. This guy that was friends with my dad came by and was pretty drunk. He picked a fight with a friend of mine who knocked this douchey guy out. He left and came back with this son, and baseball bats. I convinced them to leave, but they smashed into my moms van and a friend of mines car before getting stuck in the snow. So yeah, cops were definitely called then.

    2) When I moved in with my SO he had this neighbour who was an old blind man with a severe drinking problem. He lived alone in squalor. He didn't have running water so he would shit in a bucket on his deck and then chuck it on his lawn. No lie. I called the cops pretty much every other day.
He also had a lot of street people who would come drink at his house. From our kitchen we could clearly see the side of his house. When I was cooking dinner one day, a homeless woman walked around to the side of his house, squatted and took a dump all over the side of his house. Needless to say, dinner was ruined.

    1) I called the police because I spotted some girl getting jumped in a parking lot by two or three other girls. I think they saw me slowing down because when I circled the block to get a good description, they either went into an alley or into a car because they weren't there.

    2) I called the police because a cow had gotten out of someone's pasture and was running down the side of the road. (By road, I mean the interstate during rush hour.) I originally pulled over because I love cows and was going to try and coax it back into its pasture. But then I remembered I'm a city girl and even though I've seen "City Slickers" a dozen times, I'm not qualified for that. So I called the cops.

    3) Around the time of the Boston bombing, Nashville had the Music City Marathon. On one of the streets where the folks would be running, I saw a gray backpack propped up against a fuse box. There wasn't a pedestrian around, and it was a busy area that gets onto I-24 so it's not the average place for someone to drop a backpack. I called the local cops so they'd have the heads up, just in case.

    4) On my way to work, I was in bumper-to-bumper traffic. A car was pulled over at the shoulder and a woman was inside with her face pressed against the steering wheel. It didn't look like she was sleeping, but it didn't look like she had been in an accident. I called a well check so they could go and make sure she wasn't having a medical emergency. I probably should have stopped, but I'm a big scaredy cat because of all the urban legends my mom has told me about folks who stop on the highway.

  • 1.  I called twice on the same people when I lived in my condo, because they were screaming so loudly I could hear them from another building.  Once the girl threatened to set the place on fire, second time the guy threatened to throw her off the balcony

    2.  On a Sunday afternoon I watched a guy inject himself with heroin in a parking lot outside a drugstore, and the driver of the car had nodded off needle still in his arm, head against the window. They were arrested, car impounded, and the driver fled the state and is wanted.  I was subpoenaed to testify before he fled the state and will be if he ever gets caught.
