Feeling violated

I hate this feeling. It makes every emotion intensified.

Someone tried breaking in our home around 1:30am last night/this morning. H and I are in pins and needles. We both jump at every noise.

Thank god Allie is oblivious. She heard the door bell and asked about it. We told her it was a dream.

:( I am way too high strung for this shit.

Re: Feeling violated

  • They started juggling the door handle and banging on the door. We could see their shadows from our bedroom window. Apparently I yelled I was calling 911. H seems to think that scared them off.

My car was rummaged through on Monday. They took Allie's coloring book and change.

We found a little boys bike in the yard yesterday. It was hidden under bushes on the side of our house.

The cops believe it is all related. We are the first house in the subdivision and off the main road.

  • This happened to us a few months ago! It's a scary feeling! Took a while for me to finally relax and sleep w out waking to every noise :( sorry this happened it sucks!

  • The door bell was the idiot cop who came back to ask us a question. He had my fucking number. We jumped out of our skin.

  • Plus, the college just opened back up. Crime seems to go up in Aug./Sep. last time it was the night before Allie's 4th birthday.

It ended up being some drunk guy thinking that our appt. was his, and insisted on entering by kicking and hitting the door, my SO actually talked to him while I called the cops. He left, and about 10 min. later came back again, he was so out of it. Sadly he disappeared before the cops showed up. Has never happened again thank goodness. Made me put locks on all the windows near the front door and other entrances

  • So scary! We have had 3 break ins/attempts on my street in the last month. It's got me super nervous because I'm home alone with the girls most of the time. The last one was a couple of nights ago, and my neighbor was terrified as they tried to get in. She was to scared to even call out to her husband who was sleeping upstairs.

  • That is extremely scary. Do you have an alarm system?
  • We don't. We are planning to ask our LL. Our area of town is typically safe. :(

  • I'm so sorry, MW
    :(
  • Reasons I own guns. When DH was out of town for a week once I kept a loaded .22 rifle next to my bed. We live in a semi rural area, but the girl in the apt below us has drug problems and has admitted to upsetting the local biker gang.

At least ask. I live in a fairly upscale area with no crime but every house in my neighborhood has an alarm (I think the builders did them?) while we don't turn them on every night, they are there.

Plus you can get some that chirp and say which door is being opened- a bonus if you have a toddler sized escape artist!

We have guns too. It still makes you feel violated.

    :-( I'm sorry I happened.

ETA:  Yeah, guns don't make a difference in your case.  You live in the city limits, don't you?  Having a gun is not the exception to the rule.

  • It's the law in Kennesaw! ;) yes, we are city. In fact we were told we could be cited if we did not have a a gun. I don't think they enforce it

  • I remember my uncle telling me about it when I was younger.  I can't imagine they would be able to enforce it unless they were just looking for reasons to piss with you.   Is Wild Mans still open?  I remember all of his gun signage.

I really am sorry honey, while I'd like to say I'm surprised, my Uncle was robbed there too, and he had more than his one minimum gun in the house (most of which they stole in the process). :-(

  • I've heard stories about Wild Man's. I don't want to know if he is still around. He sounds revolting.

  • I remember walking by there when I went to the Whistle stop for breakfast.  We always had to walk around the block because there was never parking near there.

DH is a police officer and we live in the town he works in. Our town is a small town of a little over 8,000 people and EVERYONE who lives here thinks they live in the best, quiet, quaint town you can find. Let me tell you what... the crime that happens around here is unbelievable. The reason we live in the city is the response time for police if we needed it is around 2-4 minutes on average -- our city is barely 5 square miles big.  If we lived out of the city where we would need the local county sheriff office their response time is almost 20-40 minutes -- even for a high priority call.  Even 3-10 minutes is a LONG time when someone is actively breaking into your house!

Take it from a police wife, your town isn't as safe as you believe it is. You just don't hear about all thing that really happen on a day to day basis.

I keep playing this over in my head. This is like telling someone, "Everything happens for a reason" or "it's god's plan" when something bad happens. Next time keep this in mind.

@Mysterious_wife - sorry I wasn't' trying to make you feel worse. I was just trying to be honest and blunt about the situation. I saw your post that something happened again last night. I was just trying to make sure you stay on your toes and aware. I see so many people who blow things off "because they live in a safe area" and then bad things end up happening.

Respectfully MW, I am going to have to agree with @MMason12. I am a 911 dispatcher and people would be appalled if they knew the amount of crime going on around them. I'm not saying this to scare you. I am saying it because it is the truth.

Someone else mentioned an alarm system. From my point of view, an alarm is worth crap. Burglar alarms are jokes to us at our center. Once we FINALLY recieve a call from the alarm center, the burglar is usually long gone by the time officers arrive. For example, we had an active break in at a residence in the city. The alarm company called us 6 minutes after initially receiving the signal from the home and calling the home to make sure everything was OK. They reached the homeowner who said yes, there was someone breaking into her home. The homeowner waited to call 911 because she thought the alarm company would call for her. They did. 6 MINUTES later! After a couple minutes, she called 911 and reached us before the alarm company ever made the first call to 911. When she called us she was irate, and rightfully so, but we had no idea what she was talking about since we still hadnt received the alarm company's call. Officers were at her house in less than 2 minutes after she initally called. If the alarm company had called us as soon as they got the alarm we would have been there in time to catch the guy. Another example, a business was broken into and we received the call 12 minutes later. The alarm went off silently for 12 minutes and video surveillance showed them in the business for 12 minutes. Officers were on scene in 30 seconds from the time 911 was notified.

If you're going to have an alarm, get one with a loud ass audible alarm. Noises like that and knowing that someone is home is sometimes enough to scare a thief away.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope you never have to go through it again. And like I tell any of my callers who have been through this, please dont hesitate to call 911. It's what we're here for. If you hear a noise, see a suspicious vehicle or anything seems out of place, please call us. An officer will gladly do check in the neighborhood and look around.

  • Dogs and alarms. There are just too many houses out there that a burgler will practically always pass up a home with a dog or an alarm. Even if it is just an alarm sticker.

I'm not trying to scare you more. If I could do anything to help make sure that no one goes through what you went through, I would do it.

I just wanted to point out to you that basing your hopes of feeling protected on an alarm isn't always the best option. An alarm can be useful. I agree. If you do get one, make sure to get one with the loudest ass audible alarm possible, especially something that will wake your neighbors so even if you're not home, they will call 911 as well. I just wanted you to understand that there is a delay in alarm systems. They don't dispatch the officers. 911 does and we don't know about your house alarm until the alarm company calls us. For us at 911 it is more useful for us to get the call directly from the homeowner on site rather than the alarm company who can rarely provide us with information.

Like another PP mentioned, dogs and loud alarms are good deterrents. Even alarm signs in your yard is a deterrent. But, please DO NOT HESITATE to call 911 first. Do not rely on an alarm company to call us. Being proactive yourself and calling for extra patrol, suspicious vehicles or people and watching out for your neighbors property is more effective than any good alarm system. Talk to your neighbors. Let them know when you're home alone or out of town. Ask them to watch out for your place. Also, nice big floodlights are great for lighting up an area so you can see what's going on outside.

I'm not trying to scare you. I know you're scared. I've been in your shoes. And I know how scary it can be to feel like your one safe place in life has been violated. There's no magical solution to make that fear go away. I'm sorry you went through this and I hope that it never happens again.
