TTC after 35

HSG test

Wondering for those of you that have had this, what it is like. Is it painful? My RE said it only takes about 10 min and that I should pre medicate with 400-800mg of Advil 1 hour before it. Could you drive yourself home afterwards or did you need a ride? Do you get the results immediately?

I appreciate any insight.

Re: HSG test

  • I took Advil before it & I honestly didn't think it was too bad. I was a little crampy later that day, but that was also fairly mild. I got the results right away. GL!

  • I recently had this.. Some discomfort but it was tolerable. I took ibuprofen afterwards.. I also received report immediately afterwards. I've been reading and it seems that the HSG may increase your chances in natural pregnancy!!
  • It was painful for about a minute. I drove myself and it was no problem to drive home.

It wasn't that bad at all. I took Ipuprofen in advance. The technicians know what they are doing and it was over in less than 2 minutes. Had some mild cramping when they inserted the catheter through my cervix. I received the results at the same time and also received a disk of the images to take directly to my RE. No problem driving myself home and no spotting or cramping afterwards. That was my experience- hope it is easy for you too! Good luck!

  •  I was a nervous wreck before mine... the fear was the worst part.  It felt similiar to a pap.  My RE did it so I had immediate results. My tubes were clear so I had no pain really, although I bled some.  My RE gave me antibiotics and I took some advil and we had to abstain from sex for two days.  I drove myself straight back to work.  I spotted for a day maybe...

  • Good luck! You'll do great. Let us know how it goes. I am due for my period at the end of this week. Hoping it does not come! The RN at the office said it would most likely be at the end of next week or the following. I have to have my final set if blood work drawn day 3 too.

Waiting for all of this bloodwork to come back had me a nervous wreck . They have been calling me as it comes in and everytime I see the RE office on my phone- my heart drops!

Can't wait to get the testing done and get a plan in place!

Good luck Monday! I'll be thinking of you.
  • Uncomfortable. If you go in with the fear of God like I did you'll think "wow! That wasn't so bad!" There is some discharge and they give you a mammoth size pad so be prepared for that when picking out your outfit for the day!

  • I had my test done today.  It really wasn't that bad!  It was fairly similar to an annual exam except they inflate a balloon in your uterus.  This was the worst part because it caused some serious cramping for me.  It only lasted until they deflated it after the test, which took less than 5 mins.  My OBGYN did the test and I could see everything on the monitor when they were doing it.  Afterwards, they went back through all the pictures and explained the results.  I didn't realize how worried about it I was until they told me everything was fine...and I almost burst into tears!  :-)  Good luck!
  • Mine was TERRIBLE! There was a med student doing it and they had to hook me up and start the test twice. It felt like horrible, horrible menstrual cramps!! I did drive myself and I was planning to go to work afterwards but I went straight home...
