Are you in your forever home?

I know it's late, but hopefully people will stumble into this thread tomorrow too lol.

Personally, I can't decide if I think this will be our forever home or not.  I think about it a lot.  It's our first home, we had it built last year, it's beautiful and we love it.  I was unhappy with the lot grading after it was done (ended up being very hilly instead of flat) but it's starting to grow on me.  We have enough bedrooms for the kids even if/when we have one more, though 2 are on the small side.  Our house is set back far from the street which I really love, even though it's a super, super quiet street, I don't have to worry about a kid darting into it when we go outside.  We plan to put a deck on, finish the basement, and put a pool in.

Still, when we built the house there were some things we wanted that weren't in the budget, so we do fantasize about getting to do it again and everything additional we'd do if we could.  The more I think about it, though, the more I think this may be our forever house. There's so much I love about it that I wouldn't want to give up.

How about you?

ETA:  If you're not, do you think you're in your "forever town"?  If we moved, I think I'd want to stay in the same area/school district so the kids wouldn't have to switch.

Re: Are you in your forever home?

  • I don't think so.  While it fits us now, I can see how it won't in a couple of years when the girls are older.  Plus, my DH plays the piano and would love to have a formal living room with space for our own piano.  Now we have a Great Room with no space for one.  At the moment, I would love my house a lot more if our neighbors to the east would move! :-)

  • Nope. It's a great house, but our dream is to upgrade in 8-10 years to a small hobby farm (3-5 acres, ideally). We already live our dream area though, so our goal is just to have a larger property. My parents will likely live in a separate building on the same property as well, and help us with the mortgage.

NO and NO!  I wouldn't want this to be our forever home or our forever state.  We move every couple of years so we probably will not be in a forever home for quite a while.

  • I think we might be. We are doing lots of improvements here, so we're making it exactly what we want: finishing the basement, making a first floor master bedroom, putting in a pool. It's a modest house, but soon it will be just what we want! We figure when the time is right, we'd like to buy a vacation home somewhere. And I love the idea of the kids coming home to where they grew up. And if we bought a great big home, it would eventually be too big for just my husband and me. Our home is manageable now, and it will be when we are old too!
  • My husband and I disagree on this. We do need more space (really just bedrooms as living space is adequate), so would need to add on if we stayed here which we could easily do. I would like to move when our family is complete. The problem is ideally we would like a 6 or 7 bedroom house which limits our buying. We love our neighborhood and town, so I am not sure what we will do.
  • We bought the house H grew up in from his parents. It's close to the city in a great town, the schools are fantastic, and our house is plenty big enough. However, our taxes are literally outrageous (as much as some small mortgages each month), but they fund the awesome school system. Also, while I love that the houses are all unique because they were built in the 30's, it means detached garages and a not-very-open floor plan. I doubt H would ever want to sell, as its his childhood home, but I could see us wanting something more open when we get older.

  • Can I just say I hate the new format, where I can't see where everyone is from?
No, not our forever home or town. We are cramped with only one and I shudder to think of what our house will look like when number 2 comes in a month. The city (Atlanta, for those dying to know) is OK-ish. It's easier to forget I'm in the Bible Belt in the city limits, but our nieghborhood is kinda ghetto and it is still Atlanta, after all.
I dream of building our own house in Idaho.

  • No. It is our until the kids go to college house. We bought in this area due to the school district and what they offer, we have no desire to retire here.
  • Probably?  We had it custom built in the last year.  It cost a ton and we pretty much put what we want in it.  I don't know though.  We are in a development where we wanted to be for the kids which may or may not be how we want to retire someday.

  • yes, definitely love the house and the neighborhood.
  • Nope. We hope to move in the next 5 years. Our house is a great starter home and has a great use of living space. Still, we would like a bigger house and a larger yard.

  • No, I don't think so.  I really like our house for now, but I think it won't be too long until we grow out of it.  We have a tiny lot and I think our next house will have a bigger lot.  Plus, I would really like to keep sending my kids to public schools and the public high school my kids would go to isn't that great.  I'm guessing we'll stay in this general area, but probably move to a neighboring city.

  • No, we're not. We don't own yet, partly because we don't know where DHs job will have us settled permanently yet. We're within a few years of buying. Since we're already in our mid-30s we only intend to buy one home ever and plan to stay there.

  • No. It might be our forever town, but we would love to live closer to family/friends.

  • Nope. We are finally in the state and town we want to live, but are renters.. We hope to stay in this house for 3 years or so and then build. Can't wait!

  • No. We are in a rental right now due to school changes and then wanting to move to a different elementary school zone, so we have to wait until the end of this year and petition for a school change, bc DD really wants to stay at her school until the end of elementary.
  • Yes.  We just purchased our first home a few months ago and we had been planning the where and when for YEARS.  We specifically wanted our kids in this school district...and in this town which is not too far from DH's work.  The only way we will move is if by some weird occurrence DH gets a new job much further away.  At the present time, we do believe this is where we will stay forever.

  • Nope. The house that we are in we are renting with the option to buy in a few years. We are just waiting to see what road DH job is going to take. I love our house and where we are at but it isn't where either of us want to be forever. Ideally we will buy this house in 2-3 years, do some renovations and then it will become a rental property for me to manage. Our dream is to buy or build a house about 20-30 minutes from where we are with a lot of land. We will see what happens but I definitely don't see us staying here for more than another 5 years.

  • Maybe? We both love our house and neighborhood. There are few cosmetic things we will do but nothing major. It's in a great school district. We are in the town we want to be in also. I would love to stay where we are at least until the kids go to college but there is always a possibility that we will have to move for H's job. We have moved several times and have decided that the only way we will move again is if it is his dream job which would be at the company's corporate office.

  • Right now we are renting a duplex but plan to buy our first home within the next couple months. We paid off all of our debt and have the money saved we just need DH's credit score to be slightly higher.  We are hoping to buy a house that we can be comfortable in for a long time.  That way if we have the money to move into something nicer later, great; if not, oh well.

I am 99% sure we are in our forever town.  We toyed with the idea of buying a house in a bordering town because we can get way more for our money.  When it came down to it we really love where we live and the schools are great.  IMO it would be selfish to move to a nearby town, causing our child(ren) to change schools just because we want a new house.  If DH received an amazing job opportunity we would consider moving but I would hate to leave this town.

  • Eh, I don't know. We live in a wonderful penthouse apartment that feels like a house (it's 5342 sqft, had to use a calculator, I use meters). this square footage includes the rooftop, which we want to convert to a garden in a couple of years. It's too big for us right now, but I want to have another child. Our neighborhood is one of the nicest in Lima. I also love the style of the apartment and the building, it's like an old French hotel. The only thing I don't really love is the view, my ILs have an apartment with a view of the ocean that is TDF, or we could be looking at the golf club and that would be better.

We wouldn't age here for sure, it's two stories plus the rooftop and I prefer no stairs when I get old.

  • I don't know. We moved in last year just before DS was born. We made the decision early on to be in the nicest town we could afford - we have great schools, great rec system, nice library and parks. They are currently building a huge park/playground across the street. We are definitely in our forever town.

I love our house, but we'll need to add a bathroom and re-do the kitchen. It's not a big house but we have lots of "living space" but small bedrooms. At this point I don't care about a bigger house but I'm not ready to say this is it. We'll probably reevaluate in 5 to 10 years.

  • Nope and nope. I love my house. It is the best/biggest house I have lived in. We are only renting but the owners love us and want us to buy it. It only has 3 rooms. Ideally we really eventually need 4 with 2 kids and SO building computers and all of my hobbies as well. Sometimes we have 11 computers lieing around. Or 3 and a study would work. I hate the location. Actually I don't really like AR and would love to move to a cooler climate. Of course I am extremely grateful for what I have and I realize how blessed I am. I could compketely see us staying here forever and that would be ok. I'm just knit picking.

  • no but could be yes.

It isn't my dream house. I would love a slightly bigger house and for sure more land but it can accommodate us three plus one more if we choose.

  • Not even close. We will be leaving in two years for another base, either in the US or overseas. No forever home for us for about 10 years.

  • Yep! We bought it for this reason.  It's our second home we've owned and it's where we are staying. Not a huge fan of the town itself, but it has stellar schools and is right outside the city, so everything is within a 20-30 min drive, which is nice. Family is close too.

  • No to forever house and forever town.

I really like our house but I would love to live in Washington State or Oregon with a small acreage eventually. Our house is certainly big enough for all of us and 2 more LO's or so but it's not my dream home. We don't have a master bath and there are still a lot of upgrades we need to do. Plus, our yard isn't huge and we don't have a garage.

We'd love to build our forever home on a few acres and I want a horse or two. This house was a killer deal, in a nice neighborhood and it works for us now. I'm happy in it but it's not the forever place.

  • No idea if we are. I do love our current house and neighborhood, but I would also like to live in a house which has more vintage guts. I'd love to renovate something eventually, too.

  • I hope so.

3 years ago we had the opportunity to buy my childhood home (my parents were moving). I love living here--although now things are starting to go and they are super expensive to fix. I dream of winning the lottery--so I can fix/redo everything that I want to in the house.

  • Answering this really late. No and no. We just moved this summer from the city center to the burbs. It's safe to say I do not like it out here. I'm not sure what we'll do but I don't anticipate being here more than 5 years. Also, I don't believe in a forever house. The mere idea of being locked into one house for the rest of my life makes me want to curl up in a corner and rock. I have always had a serious case of wanderlust.
