Angel

I keep thinking about the name Angel. I feel like I dislike it but maybe I don't. I knew an Angel in high school and I liked the name but not the girl. Recently I met an Angelique which I don't feel is a very...American sounding name, I guess. A friend recently named her daughter Angelica which I originally hated. All I can think is Rugrats but she calls her Angel which again I can't decide if I like. WDYT? Do you like it as a stand alone? What about longer names, nn Angel?

Re: Angel

  • NMS and I could never get behind Angelica. Haha. Even knowing the Rugrats are a thing of the past and kids these days have NO idea who Reptar is.

  • The only Angels I have ever I known are male. I can't say that I am very fond of the name for either sex.

  • I really like the name Angelina. I'm not sure I;d use Angel as a NN for  girl. Angel as a stand alone name seems more like a boy name to me.

  • I like it on Latino males (Like on Dexter! Love that character)

    For a girl it's definitely got a stripper/trashy vibe.
Same here, except I don't watch Dexter.

Oh I hadn't thought of Angelina. I really like it. I still wouldn't do Angel but I like this name.

NMS, probably not even for a mn. It's a great nn, though.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I don't like it much for either sex, but I've seen it work for Hispanic men (even then I prefer Angelo though). On girls it's NMS.

  • Angel feels dated and low class to me. I do like Angela and Angelina.

  • I think of the Latino cross-dressing character in RENT. I don't like it on a girl--only on a Latino maleimage

  • I know a lady in her 40's named Angel...she wasn't born in north America though and really I think that helps it suit her. I would find it a bit much on a blue eyed blonde haired little girl...

    What about Angela?

My exBIL and his wife have a blonde/blue-eyed dd named Angel. It's still weird to me and she;s 14. Angelina is much better!

    Agreed!

Even then his full name was Angelus though.

  • I don't live in a very ethnically diverse area. I had only heard it on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a man and I assumed that had some reference to the nature of the show...he wasn't Hispanic. Since I know three female Angels in real life I just assumed it was mostly girl...maybe it'll make a nice kitty name for me someday! Thank you for all your priceless opinions!
