What to eat/drink before anatomy scan

I have my anatomy scan next week. DH and I are very excited to find out the gender! I've heard that eating or drinking certain things before hand will make the baby move around more. Have people done this and did you think it worked? What did you eat and how long before your scan?

Re: What to eat/drink before anatomy scan

  • OJ worked for me for my NT scan... I will probably do the same for my A/S.

  • I haven't done my A/S yet, but I've read that drinking something cold and sugary helps. Orange juice seems to be a common choice. I'm planning on picking up a mango smoothy from this local place before my scan because their smoothies are friggin' amazing :).

  • I had a half a muffin and some orange juice, it worked out great. He was moving around but not too much.
  • I also drank OJ.  I drank about 4 oz 30 minutes before and had another 4 in my purse in case he wasn't moving.

  • I drank milk and had toast and baby decided to curl upside down like a turtle and hide behind my belly button for a bit....so....maybe not milk. The tech did a lot of belly shaking and had me use the bathroom and roll around to each side in order to measure and get a picture of everything. Luckily we finally got the heart and its 4 chambers, that's what was the hardest to get a good picture of.

  • Good to know I have mine on the 30th!
  • You're supposed to go with a full bladder, my tech (same as my last pregnancy) suggests drinking at least 20 oz of water and about 8 oz of OJ and not peeing at all before the appointment

  • @car seat I guess my tech is a sadistic bastard because I definitely peed myself when getting my A/S with DS because of this.

Not always true. At both my OB and MFM's office, they make you empty before they scan. Their machines are advanced to where a full bladder distorts the image. ETA: didn't read the rest of the thread first--whoops! You must have a sadistic doc! The first time I went to see my OB, I was pounding water and the u/s tech saw my ready to explode bladder on the screen. She said "Poor thing! Go empty--we don't want you uncomfortable like that!"

I wish you could see my hospital/equipment.  It's a Naval Hospital in Guam and it was built right after WWII and I'm pretty sure it still has the original equipment.

a cold juice or chocolate and en empty bladder
  • Just scheduled mine and they said 32 oz of water an hour before. The thought alone makes me want to pee my pants.

  • I drank 32 oz of water an hour and a half before and I wanted to pee so bad that it started to hurt. The ultrasound tech told me that they only want a full bladder in order to measure the cervix. After he got that measurement I was able to go pee and continue with the A/S. Baby was cooperating and they actually got all the pics they needed in less than 30 minutes. But like others have mentioned, I heard orange juice or a cold drink will get the baby moving.

  • Mine said no carbonated drinks, meaning no soda or carbonated water. Any of fluids seem fine. I need to drink 6 eight ounce glasses an hour before.

  • I dint remember being given any instructions. But I drank 30 oz that morning since my a/s was for 1pm. And I had a yogurt with fruit about an hour before the appt. LO was a little too active. It took over an hour for the tech to get everything she needed.

  • Mine was early morning and I had my morning cup of 1/2 calf. Minion was moving around so much my poor tech had me stretch and wiggle and move around to try and calm LO down.
