Babies: 6 - 9 Months

WWYD??

LO is 9.5 months and isn't sitting yet. Now I know every baby develops at different paces but his pedi has me thinking that LO is in dire need to see someone from ECI for PT and OT.
DH and I have been talking this over. I told DH that I will wait until LO is a year if he still isn't sitting up then we can seriously start thinking about budgeting in PT and OT.

What do y'all think? Should I paranoid?

Re: WWYD??

  • Give it some time. My son is right on track and just started sitting unassisted like last week. He'll learn eventually, if it becomes a concern in a few months then talk to your doc about EI. However, some babies skip certain milestones and then suddenly learn them at the same time as another. I think at 9 months it shouldn't be a concern.

  • That's exactly what I was telling DH. Thank you for reassuring me about how I feel about it. @nana_osaki06

  • It would do no harm whatsoever to have hi m evaluated by EI. In fact, it can take a while to get the ball rolling when it comes to this stuff so of your pedi is recommending it then I would go ahead and look into getting registered for an evaluation. I would rather go through the process now and find out nothing is wrong than wait, get a diagnosis, and find out that I had lost time where I could have been getting him treatment.

  • If you're ped suggested it, I would at least get a consult. My LO was already seeing a PT for his cranial band, and we're still going to work on issues with his development. Every baby grows at his own rate, but there are exercises and activities you can learn that will help them develop the skills they need. I love going to PT with DS, and it's just another activity to do together. My DS has a tendency to over-extend (keep his legs and arms stiff) and it was really holding up his sitting. I learned some exercises at PT and shortly after, he'd mastered it.

My PT's office also offers an infant & older baby development class, which is a group of 4 or so other babies, and they sing songs and play while teaching the parents how to encourage gross & fine motor skills.

While the situation may not be as dire as your ped is acting like, it won't hurt anything to try it, and it could help.
