Irritable Uterus- anyone?

I am 36 weeks, and I have something my OB refers to as irritable uterus. It started last Sunday when I was experiencing awful cramps for 3 hours. I was sent to l&d and everything was fine with the babies. Ever since Sunday, I have had the same cramping at least once a day, but it never lasted longer than 30 minutes since the first time....

Until today. I woke up at 3:30 with the same pain. And it hasn't subsided since 3:30am. I saw my OB this morning and she said the best Thing to do is to take it easy and take Tylenol. The babies are just overstaying their welcome and it's causing the pain.

Have any of you been told you have an irritable uterus? Did it last long? I can't imagine this lasting for the remainder of my pregnancy all day like this.... Especially when i am trying to care for my 3 year old DS. What did you do about the on-going pain (especially the times when the pain spikes from mild/moderate to intense?)?

Re: Irritable Uterus- anyone?

  • I am not as far as you however my OB diagnosed me with the same issue. What has worked for me is getting on all fours and letting the warm shower water run over my back and rocking my hips side to side gently when the pain gets pretty intense. It not only takes pressure off the lower portion of the uterus but it will help the babies to get into a nicer position to help ease those pains if they are pressing on the cervix which can agitate those pains more so. A heating pad on low also helped. I had it with my first as well and it did lat until delivery unfortunately. Your so close so hopefully not too much longer for you! Its not comfortable at all and does make chasing a toddler around hard.

  • I had this from 28 weeks on a daily basis....it sucks but all you can do is try and take it as easy as possible and stay hydrated!
  • Did either of you have pain that was continual, rather than come and go? Today i have had no relief since it started at 3:30am and have been mostly lying around all day.
  • Yes mine was/is consistent all day long. However mine was causing cervical changes in my later weeks with my first this time it really hasnt done too much even though it hurts all day long. Have they checked you recently it could be the beginnings of labor given the week you are in.

  • I was diagnosed at 32 weeks after my NST showed nine contractions and an unaffected cervical length. Mine mostly manifested through ineffective contractions, but I'd get the pain you described at night. It was awful. I never found a way to relieve it. So sorry!!

  • I think this is whats happening to me....36 weeks contractions on nst as they move

  • I'm on hospital bedrest due to a shortened cervix and constant non-painful contractions. My contractions are aggravated by the twins moving a lot and my uterus gets irritable which in turn causes contractions. Fortunately, my contractions have not had too much impact on my cervix. Trying to hang in there.

Good luck. Try Tylenol, warm showers, and a heating pad. Ask your nurse what else you can do. I'm assuming that they have decided you are not in labor.

  • Nope- not dilated at all. I was just told to rest and take Tylenol.
Thanks for the feedback and advice ladies!
Good luck to you all- we can do it!
  • I didn't have the pain as often, but I started getting lots of ineffective contractions around 20 weeks and they became pretty much constant once I hit the 3rd tri. I don't have advice for the pain, as I also never found anything that worked (so sorry!) but for the contractions to ease up, getting off my feet and drinking extra water helped. I'm sorry you are in pain, but hang in there....you are sooo close and looking back, you won't regret a single extra day you spent cooking those lil babies!

  • I started having contractions at 26w. I didn't make it as far as you, but that's because my water broke. I was on nifedipine to help with the discomfort I also took warm baths and tried to empty my bladder as much as possible. Hang in there - it'll be over soon!
