Re: GTKY: What was your inspiration?

  • I've been wanting to post this for over a week. I'm a FTM and I'd love to hear why all the experienced moms made there choice.

I chose to go natural because I want the best chance for breast feeding to go well.

  • I can't say there was an overwhelming one thing that inspired me. I have always been huge believer that our bodies are beautifully and wonderfully made and are capable of much more than modern medicine gives them credit for. I am completely fascinated by human physiology and the process of intervention free birth. I also wanted to give my daughter and soon my son the absolute best chance at a strong beginning and to me that meant a natural birth without medical intervention.

I hope that makes sense I feel like I am rambling a bit.
  • Also, my SO used to farm goats, so he's a huge proponent for babies latching directly after birth. He says if it's good for goats, it's probably good for people too
    Favourite quote today.
DD1 I didn't really know about all the potential risks and problems associated with epidurals and interventions, I just had a stubborn belief I could do it, plus a needle in the spine horrified me.

DD2 I'd done a lot more reading and so wanted to avoid possible issues with baby latching and us bonding. Plus I had the confidence of having done it once.

  • For my 1st it was the fear of surgery. The rest of them it's been because I know that I can do it and the recovery is so much easier.

  • I never thought I'd be trying for a natural birth. My epidural in my first birth did not give me 100% relief. The truth is that if I thought it worked really well, I'd probably do it again. I still felt so much pressure and I couldn't get up to go to the toilet and I had all the things attached. I want to be able to move around. Also the fact that a second labor will probably be faster than the first.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

    My Charts since 2009

  • Several things, not in any order of importance:

Firstly, I react badly to many medications, so I try to avoid using anything I don't have to. I've heard so many bad stories about epidurals (not to mention pitocin, etc), I have always really hoped to avoid them!

Secondly, epidurals and other medications often don't work, so I figured I better be prepared even if I decided in the moment that it was worth it for me to use them.

Thirdly, for my recovery and the health if my babies, I thought if I could handle going through it without medication and interventions, it would probably be best.

So far I've had two natural, unmedicated births. I was very lucky that they were quick (very intense, but very quick). And even still, at the very last moment of each (again, very intense, quick transitions!!), I thought I couldn't do it and asked for the epidural... then gave birth before they had a chance to give it to me. So I totally understand women who don't end up going naturally!

I'm due in a few weeks and plan to go naturally again. On the one hand I have a lot of confidence in myself having done it twice already... however, I'm still also open-minded and realize each birth experience is different and I won't feel I'm a failure if I choose do go through it differently this time for whatever reason.

  • Honestly, fear of the epi ( I hate needles) and fear of major surgery (C/S).  I know that interventions lead to a cascade of things during delivery and avoiding those things was important. I grew up in a rural area/farm so I have seen many animals give birth.  I think it is a completely natural, normal process and does not need interventions.  I knew that my body was designed to give birth and that woman have been giving birth for thousands of years.
  • My inspiration is my LO, quite honestly. A natural birth isn't something I had thought much about before being pregnant. Now that I've spent these past 9 months doing everything I can to make sure LO is healthy, I'm going to continue to do so once labor starts. I feel like if I can manage to get through labor and delivery without any interventions, that's what will be best for her (assuming I have a normally progressing labor). It's not about me anymore, but what's best for her. If, when the time comes, that means I do need an epidural or C/S then I'll be fine with that, but so far I have had a completely normal pregnancy and I expect the same will hold true for birth. I suppose that's the other side of my inspiration. My body has done a remarkable job creating and carrying this LO all these months with very little direction or intervention from me and I've had zero complications. I've taken my vitamins and cut out the no-no foods and such, but otherwise I haven't really done anything else differently. If it can handle these 9 months just fine, it can probably handle birth too.

  • I was there for my sisters natural birthing of my nephew and saw how normal delivery can be. It shattered that social preconception the birthing is always a dangerous medical procedure. Then as I researched I became even more amendment about the risks of interventions and the wonderful benefits of going natural

  • You know how everyone tells you thier horror story birth stories when you are KU?  Well with DS1 I listened too well.  I'm terrified of needles, hospitals, doctors, and really just people I don't know touching me.  So with DS1 I ordered an epidural the minute I felt my first contraction, thinking that it would be better that way.  I really got lucky and had a realivly good birth experience other than the epi stalling out my contractions and it being a long labor. But...when I found out I was KU with baby #2 I wanted something different/better.

I did a bunch of research, found this board, and decided I really wanted to try for a NB.  So I guess my inspiration was to have something that felt more natural and better for me and baby.

Now that we will be TTC baby #3 soon, I think my inpiration for that birth (should we be lucky enough to conceive a third!) will be the quick recovery time and a good start to BF'ing since I really loved both of those benefits with DS2.

  • I chose to attempt a med free and intervention free birth for a few reasons.  I have a genuine fear of needles and the thought of having an IV or a needle in my spine makes me want to pass out.  Breastfeeding was and is very important to me and I have factors that are already a roadblock for breastfeeding, so I didn't want the added roadblock of medication.  I wanted my recovery to be as easy as possible, so that I could go home and spend time as a family as soon as possible.

My goal is to attempt a med free and intervention free birth again.  I hope that it is possible but the ultimate goal is for myself and my son to be healthy and safe.

  • I wanted to do everything I could to ensure that my son had a safe, comfortable (as much as possible, anyway) entrance into the world.  Going natural seemed the best way to go.  While I would have been OK if it had been needed for medical purposes, I just really wanted to avoid a c-section.  I don't care what anyone says, I would not have been OK not being able to touch and hold my baby immediately.  After 8 months of waiting for him, to not have that initial moment would have been tough, and I wanted to be able to have that.

And I got very, very lucky!  I went natural and everything was perfect.  I feel very fortunate for that!
