Ginger baby!

I am black foot Indian. I have a olive skin tone and dark hair, along with the rest of my family on fathers side. My mothers side of the family is Greek and German.

My dh is red headed and his skin tone isn't as fair as most red heads. His hair isn't fire red either...he's the only red haired one in his family besides his grandmother, he's actually a quarter lebanese!! DH sister and mother both have jet black hair and olive skin tone.

I just can't wait to see what our little girl is gonna look like ! I hope she has red hair like her daddy but everyone keeps telling me red heads are more and more uncommon!

:) we are naming her Scarlett Mae
So red hair would be perfect for her lol

  • To get a red haired baby, both the mom and dad have to carry the gene for red hair. DD1 has red hair which was surprising to us. DH is blond and I have light brown hair.

But we both have red haired people in our families, so that's how it happened that she ended up w red hair and hazel eyes. Genetics are fun.

  • Love it!! I am having twins and my Dh's brother and grandma are red heads. DH has a little red in his beard if it grows out a little. We are naming our girls Sadie and Scarlet not even realizing how funny it would be if Scarlet comes out a red head!!
  • I'm a red head so all of the nurses and my family and MWs were take bets in the delivery room to see if we would have a red headed baby. I was in total shock when DD ended up being blonde hair, blue eyed. I am super pale and she tans super easily. Sometimes I swear if I had not seen her come out of me I would question if she were mine. LOL
  • My dad has some red in his beard. That's the only red I know of in my family. I wonder I wonder !
  • Both parents do not need read hair to have a little ginger :) I am a redhead and red hair appears no where at all on my fathers side!! I'm also hoping my little girl comes out with some red curls :)

  • You never know!! My husband is very dark skinned Hispanic (Puerto Rican) with black hair. I'm blonde and our daughter is blonde haired blue eyed and looks exactly like me.... It's so weird!

Both parents do not need to have red hair, but they both need to carry the red hair gene. Just because you do not know anyone on your father's side with red hair, doesn't mean there aren't any.

  • I could have sworn my 1st DS was going to have auburn hair. My twin sister and I have auburn hair we got from our Dad, and my MIL had auburn hair before it turned gray. So DH had auburn hair when he was little, and it eventually turned very dark brown. DS1 has brown hair with auburn highlights, but it's pretty much just brown. So neither of our colors. Who knows! My friend and her husband are both Hispanic and had a blonde hair, blue eyed son. Doesn't look like either of them! So strange how genetics work.

  • My parents both have dark brown hair; my sister and I both have strawberry blonde hair;  the joke was always about the mailman.  I take it my parents had recessives (mom - Swedish, dad - Scottish).  But I'd bet it was 10% chance that sister and I would both be strawberry blonde.  That said, my sister married Polish, so her kids are strawberry blonde and blonde.  I married a Native South American (black hair, brown eyes) who probably has no recessive gene whatsoever --- although there is rumor of a green-eyed great, great aunt --- my DD has medium brown hair and dark brown eyes --- and I expect the same for DS.  Now, my grandkids may be interesting...  (as you are contemplating for your kids)  Here's to healthy genetic variations and surprises!

  • DH and I both have some red, and recessive red on both sides, I am hoping for blue eyes like DH, his eyes are mesmerizing! I have hazel eyes that shift brown more than green. We both have a lot of blond in our families too, but I picked up more of the darker tones, browns and better skin tone. DH is fairer and freckles easier than my family. My mom was the odd duck red head in her family as a kid but her hair was darker after me. She is a bottle strawberry blond now. So since we are having a girl, if she hates her hair at some point in life she can change it. Lord know I have!
  • I found what looks to be a fairly scientific site that has eye a d hair colour predictions on it for baby based on you, your parents, partner & his parents.

Cara, neat site.  It says that for black hair and (strawberry) blonde hair, LO would be 100% brown.   I thought maybe one would get DH's thick black hair, now I won't.

  • Awesome site but not entirely accurate. I put in DH and my hair color.. Got results.. Cool. Then just for fun since my niece has fire engine red hair I put in her parents hair color.. Brown and blonde and it said there was 0% chance of red hair.. And yet my cutie niece shows otherwise! So I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
  • My husband is one of two red heads in his family, everyone else is brunette. I'm the only (natural) blonde in my family, everyone else is brunette. DS was born with red hair, turned blonde around a year, and now at 2 years old it appears to be turning red again. You just never know!
