brushing teeth

how long do you actually brush your LO's teeth for?  DS barely lets me do it!  I try to brush morning  & night but I cant imagine I am getting them very clean.  Im wondering what your tricks are?

Re: brushing teeth

  • It's been forever since I posted here! Brushing teeth is a two person job here, and we actually have been really slacking on it because it is so unpleasant. When they had their first dentist appointment, they showed us how to do it. Sit facing someone in chairs so that you are touching knee to knee. Your child should sit facing you, and then lay him back so his head is in the other person's lap and kiddo is looking at that person upside down. That person now has a great view of all of the teeth, and you can hold hands with your kiddo while the other person brushes. In our case, the brushing person is also kinda pinning the child's head in place because they fight it so much. We only attempt it at bedtime. Never twice a day.

  • We are pretty lucky with brushing since we got him an electric brush with a timer on it. Usually he brushes the full 2 minutes. He enjoys brushing so much, sometimes it is 3-4 times a day.

  • We bought Nolan a spin toothbrush and he loves it!  I help him at first, but then give him a turn to brush his own teeth.
  • I think it tickles his mouth because he always turns away. He doesn't hate it though, so that's good. I brush them for as long as I can to make sure I got all the teeth.

  • My kid is scared of the electric toothbrush.  We are old school and using a manual one.  But I have to make tbrushing sound like the most fun amazing thing we are goin to do.  Hard sale in our house!

  • I give her the toothbrush and let her chew on it for a while, then I have to hold her tight while I do a more thorough job. She hates it, but we've tried everything.

Someone on here suggested before, brushing your teeth with her in front of a mirror and showing her how to do it, then take turns and they might be more willing. It only worked the first time for us though, then she was back to screaming.
  • We have to hold DD down most nights and can only brush for 15-20 secs. Like a PP said, its so unpleasant that we only do it ( most) nights.

  • We have an electric one and he loves it. Maybe this is a FFFC, but we've been so busy that I brush his teeth maybe once a week : /  He uses it multiple times a week but he can't do it himself so I'm sure he really doesn't get to much of it clean. I just forget because I brush mine before he wakes up and after he goes to bed.

  • Another vote for the electric toothbrush here. Audra would barely let us do it with the manual until DH tried his (we have electric) on her one day and she LOVED it. We went right to Target and she picked out the cute Up & Up brand with flowers on it (it was only $3.99!). She now lets us brush her teeth really well. I would say we do it for about 20 seconds or so and that is going over all teeth multiple times.
