C-sections

Spacing of babies and c-sections

I apologize if this question is asked a lot, but what is the recommended time waiting to get pregnant again after a Csection?  I have my pp appointment in 2 weeks and plan on asking this question but I thought I'd ask here first.  I'd really like to try for a VBAC next time, if that's even an option for me.
As you can see from my siggie, I'm also infertile so I have no idea if I can even get pregnant again unless we do fertility treatments.  My DH and I are not keen on doing them again so I almost just want to wait and see what happens because it could take years (if ever!).  However I know it *could* happen right away, too, so of course I want to make sure I'm healed up if anything were to happen.
TIA!

Re: Spacing of babies and c-sections

  • I think they say a year so the uterus can fully heal. I am positive though that there are women that get pregnant before though. I would say though if you want to try a VBAC though I would wait until the Dr says it is okay since they may not be on board with that plan otherwise.

  • Mine said a year as well. And I would wait at least that if you want a vbac! :-) I got pregnant about 10 weeks after DD was born and miscarried at around 11 weeks. Don't know for sure if there was any correlation, but I wouldn't be willing to chance that again.
  • I have heard 18 mos between deliveries minimum for VBAC, but more is better. I don't think it is as big of a deal to wait if you don't plan to vbac.

  • I was told 2 years conception to conception for Vbac (18 months min, 24 months preferred)
  • My OB said I could get pg again 1 year after delivery (and I actually do need his approval, as a surrogate an RE won't do a transfer unless my OB's cleared me).

  • Ideal for your body is 18 months between pregnancies. My doctor said 6 months was the minimum but a VBAC wouldn't be permitted with that short of a gap.

  • As most people said, one year. I'm told I'm a candidate for vbac and this was the time frame.
  • I was told to wait at least a year before trying to get pg after my 1st c/s. We were safe and waited 3! My friend, however, got pregnant 3 months after her 1st section. They monitored her closely for any signs of uterine rupture. Her uterus was so thin at time of her 2nd surgery, it was almost translucent. Dr definitely recommended they be A LOT more cautious in pg prevention for at least 18 months after the 2nd one. Her recovery with that one was HARD!
  • Depends on the OB and how well you happen to heal. Some people just do not recover to well. My recoveries suck (pain) but I do heal rather well and have had no thinning issues or anything. My OB says a year. I have heard 2 years with previous children. I was told if a VBAC is involved, you want to wait closer to 2 years.

  • My doc told me 18-24 months. A friend of mine had her first two thirteen months apart, but they were both c-sections; she waited for about two years and then her third was a VBAC. However, I think that her second child/c-section would have been a c-section no matter what; I don't know the full story but it was something specific to his labor.

  • My doctor said to wait at least 6 months before TTC but I think typically they want a bigger gap between pregnancies to attempt VBACs. I know my SIL had a VBAC 3 years after her c-section and that was what was recommended to her.

I'm 5w pregnant now and this will be my 3rd CS. DD is 11 months. My doctor knew I wanted to get pregnant again as quickly as possible and suggested a year, but said 6 months minimum. I've used fertility treatments for all pregnancies and I will be 38 when I deliver. At this point, we want 4 kids, but who knows how I will feel after baby #3.

  • I have dor and an re basically told me to start ttc at 6 months...but this was not for a vbac. FFor a vbac I think I have heard at least 18 mos between births but I have heard different things. My practice won't do a vbac.

  • Regardless of how you birth your child: 18-24 months is recommended.  However, I saw my doctor this week and my DD is 14 months - she told me that if I were pregnant now, so approximately 12 months, she would allow me to try for a VBAC.  She indicated it also depends on your age, weight and health.  I'm pretty positive I'll repeat but it doesn't matter because I'm not trying until DD is at least 24 months.  It's nice to know the option is available though.

  • My dr said if I wanted to try vbac we need to wait 2 years between births so about 15 months from birth to conception. We got pregnant after ds was 6 months and I want another csection so it will be scheduled
  • We were told minimum 6 months before TTC.

  • My first two are only 12.5 months apart. #2 and #3 are 2 years apart.

I've had 3 c-sections without complication. :) Never cared to try a VBAC.
  • Ok, I may be the exception here but I didn't really want to wait a full year and it has posed complications.  My 1st and 2nd Csections were exactly 18 months to the day.  My 2nd and 3rd were 17 months.  My uterus definitely didn't have enough time to heal and resulted in a uterine window.  I still have that window but am hoping my ute is in better shape this time sicne I waited 2 years to get pregnant.
