DESPERATE! PLEASE HELP! - "Morning" Sickness

This is my first pregnancy. I started dealing with "morning" (more like all day) sickness at about a month and a half or so into this pregnancy, I kept missing work and actually had to stop working very shortly after because of it. I'm now 16 weeks along. I've never been much on medicine and try to avoid it as much as I can, but I was so desperate to stop feeling so "blah" (extremely horrible!) all the time and to stop puking my guts out constantly, that I tried some. The medicine the hospital gave me seemed to calm the symptoms (never completely taking them away), but I've had to stop taking the meds because I kept getting intense pains in my heart and head. I've thrown up ginger ale, crackers, soup, jello, even water...! Most women I talk to say they didn't have morning sickness very bad or that it didn't last long or that they didn't have it at all. And I've been hearing for like a month now from everyone that, "It's going to be over soon", but it's not and I really don't care to hear that anymore. Some days I can hardly function at all. I want my baby to be healthy, and I realize throwing up all the time is not good, but I don't know what to do. So please, I don't mean to be a bother, but if any of you have a natural remedy for this, or could ask your mom or grandma (usually the older generations know about a lot that we don't take time to learn) I would sooo appreciate it! PLEASE HELP!!! :'-(

  •  I'm sorry your going through this.I had it awful til 32 weeks! I also found out I was allergic to Zofran. Ginger did nothing for me and I'm allergic to mint but you can try those. Lemon and honey helped me a little Make sure you push fluids, even if you can only keep water down. If you can't keep water down, go in. You don't want to risk dehydration. It's not natural but what finally worked for me was unisom and b vitamin complex, Maybe talk to your doc about that or other medication choices. My sister survived off Phenergan.

  • I agree with PPs you should consult your OB or MW.  I had bad morning sickness until 16 weeks.  I tried ginger, lemon water, crackers, sea bands, etc.  Honestly, there was not anything that really helped.  I had to give it time and eventually it got better.  I only threw up once a week though.  If you are having trouble keeping water down you really should consider medication and consult your doctor.  I hope you feel better soon.

  • Like PPs you should consult your doctor first. If you can't keep water down dehydration will become a major concern. You may need meds to balance your electrolytes and rehydrate and then you can try natural options later. I used acupuncture through my first trimester and it worked very well. My accupunctrist was also able to give me a herbal tea with mint and ginger that also helped.
  • I had morning sickness really bad. Bad enough to fall below my pre pregnancy weight, and it lasted well beyond the time when it should have stopped. I tried Zofran for a while, but they switched me to Phenegren when it stopped working. If you are having trouble with the meds you are on, tell your doctor. If it's bad enough that you can't keep anything down, then you need the extra help. And for the record, I tried all the other natural remedies first. Things like peppermint tea, and sour candy, ginger everything. Nothing worked for me. I think once it gets to a certain point, meds are all that will help.

  • I agree with pp that you should follow up with ob/mw. The thing that worked best for me (a suggestion from my grandma) was steeping real ginger root in hot water and smelling/drinking that. I would just grate that (just the inside of it) into hot water, and if it was strong enough, I would feel better for awhile- long enough to eat a meal and keep it down. GL
  • I agree to check in with your doctor. I have also heard of acupuncture helping some women with morning sickness. You need to be able to keep down some foods and especially water. GL

I threw up everything except for fresh pineapple and Smoothie King smoothies.  Gatorade sipped was okay most of the time, but I even threw that up a couple of times too.  I got prescribed the medication but I did not take it because I really wanted to get through it without.... it was very rough but thankfully it did eventually subside, right around the time that you are at right now (16 weeks).  I lost more than 15 lbs. @  14 weeks was the WORST!  No natural remedies seemed to work for me, nor any of the traditional things like saltines or ginger ale.  I feel like I wouldn't have made it without the pineapple and smoothies.  And sometimes I just had to puke, nothing could stop it.  (Though DH sure was persistent in trying.)

PS- Also finding the right prenatal was key for me, I settled on Rainbow Light Just Once Prenatal Multivitamin (available at Target).  If I was able to keep a smoothie down, I would try to take it at the end of drinking the smoothie (to have something in my stomach).  This vitamin has extra B-vitamins and ginger in it and it is food based, so it was gentler on my stomach and it seemed to help with the nausea.  But if I could not keep anything down I would not take it.  YMMV.

  • Thanks everyone for the comments! I wound up having to go to the ER. I was badly dehydrated and very weak, and had lost weight to the point were I was lighter than I was at my first pregnancy appointment. But I've been doing better lately and hoping it just keeps getting better and better, I would really like to be able to actually enjoy this pregnancy. Thanks again! :)
  • Glad to hear you got some relief
