I starting giving him the sippy cup at 6 months. I gave him the Nuby training cup to begin with because it has a nipple to resemble a bottle nipple as well as a normal spout nipple. He used that for about a month to get him used to holding the cups. After that i gave him a Nuk trainer cup with handles and he uses that up till about a month ago and now I give him the Nuk Active Cup and that's the only sippy we use. He likes the soft nipple so he can chew on it if he pleases him.
We probably could of started off with the Nuk trainer cup and avoided trying 3 different cups but it's what worked for him.
We only give him water with a lot of ice in it, and sometimes i'll make him a bottle and put it in the cup because i'm trying to get rid of the bottle soon
We don't do sippy cups. We use straw cups and Doidy cups. Sippy cups aren't great for their teeth. So we don't even teach the kids how to use one. When they turn 1 year we drop bottles and do all straw cups. We like the Playtex Lil Grippers for straw cups.
We use a flexi straw cup, it doesn't leak and DS had no issues with it. He started actually using it at 6 months but we let him "play" with it starting at 5 months.

DS shows no interest in holding his own bottle, so I haven't really pushed a sippy cup. We have a NUK stage 1 trainer cup that we've tried a few times, but he mostly just chews on it.
I started out trying the Nuk cups with the handles but DD never really got the hang of it. She just never tipped it back far enough to get water out of it, plus I think you have to suck pretty hard to get anything out of the spout! So I switched to the Lil Gripper straw cups and she picked it up in less than a day. Love them. You can squeeze the cup to bring water up the straw so they can figure it out quickly. Found out soon after that the straw cups are actually better for their teeth anyway.
I got a dr browns cup at wal mart the other day and it transitions to a regular cup trainer with a small hole and I've found that one easiest for her to get liquid out of.
We don't do sippy cups, like PP, we went right to straws. DS started messing with DDs straw cups as soon a he could get his hands on them, but I first started giving one to him with water around 6 months. He would take a few sips but mostly just play with it. Within the last month (since he was about 8 months old) I've really noticed him starting to drink more from it. Edit: why does my phone insist on saying dippy cups?
and i thought i loved you then <a href="http://daisypath.com/">
