Pregnant while on BC?

Hi..long time, no talk! I have a question for you all..

Did any of you ladies get pregnant with your LO's while using birth control?

No. But my fear of getting pregnant on the mini-pill (slightly less effective than the combo pill) is what prompted me to switch to Mirena.

I feel like someone on here was pregnant despite having an IUD? I can't remember 100%.

Thanks ladies. I am on Altavera (for about 1 1/2yrs) and I didn't miss a dose until August 29th. I wound up taking two pills the night of the 30th..which I normally take 7am. So technically you could say I missed two doses. I began ovulating on Sept 10 & my husband and I were intimate the 11th. I thought ovulating was normal while taking bc but every forum I read says that when you take bc it prevents you from ovulating. I have gotten pregnant while ovulating with both my boys (both planned.& got pregnant on the first try)..so I'm kind of nervous. Thoughts??

The internet is right, the entire point of birth control is to the stop ovulation.

So when you say you ovulated on September 10, how do you know that? Or are you just guessing you did because that was 2 weeks before your period and that's when you're "supposed" to ovulate on the magical 28 day cycle that no one actually has?

Are you charting your temperature and believe that you've confirmed ovulation with a temperature shift? That would be pretty lucky because there'd be no point in charting if you are on birth control... Since it stops ovulation. And if that were the case, you'd only have JUST confirmed a sustained temperature shift, maybe today or yesterday, definitely not on the 12th when you posted. What I'm asking is how do you know/why do you believe you ovulated?

And yes, of course you got pregnant while ovulating with your other kids... There's no other way. So I'm not sure what you meant by that, unless you were just saying that both of your previous pregnancies were planned.

My thoughts are this: you missed one pill, one time. I'd bet that you're not pregnant. The only way to be sure is if you miss your period and take a test. You really won't know before then, but I strongly suspect you are not pregnant.

Read your package insert. It will give you instructions for missed pills depending on what week of the pack you were on.

It varies by brand, but my OB said you generally have a 12 hour window with combination pills before it's considered missed. So you may have only truly missed one pill. And assuming you took the pill on time from the 30th onward, you've had more than seven days of compliant birth control use, which is the timeframe you'd want to use backup birth control.

I have heard and read that if you do ovulate while on the pill (either through breakthrough ovulation or missing a dose), that the hormones in the pill usually still keep you from getting pregnant by making the womb a hostile environment. Basically, a fertilized egg can't implant. I don't know how accurate this is, but it kind of makes sense to me. I would ask my dr about it before I took it as gospel, though.
