Success after IF

Y'all were right.

I should have waited.  In a way, I'm glad I went and got the u/s and got a guess at a due date, and saw that there actually was something in there.  But he measured the bean at 5 weeks even, not 5 and a few days like I guessed from my O date, and there was no fetal pole or anything, just a black sac.  I promised myself that I knew what I was going in there for, and I wouldn't get upset about any of it.  And I'm still thrilled that I got to see something in there and get a preliminary EDD (5/15!)  But I was sort of hoping to see a little more, and when he reminded me that the miscarriage rate at this point is 25% (no, not that the success rate is 75%, but that the mc rate is 25%) it just brought back all that old fear.  I was doing so much better when I could be blindly, blissfully, naive.  I should have held onto that for another week.
So is 6 weeks 0 day too early for a hb?  He wants to see me back in exactly one week, but now I'm hesitant.  He said he really thought we'd see one.

Re: Y'all were right.

  • ((Hugs)) it's so hard! It's possible at 6 weeks to see a hb, but that's pushing it. We saw a hb at 6w2d and the tech was a little surprised that we saw one. It sounds like most RE's wait until 7w because there should be a hb by then. I would try and wait a little more than a week for the next u/s. I wish you had gotten a little more reassurance. It sounds like the little bean probably implanted an the later side.

  • I'm sure everything is fine, TJ. It's fine for the bean to be a few days off in either direction, and the rest of it sounds normal to me for measuring 5 weeks.

I agree with KMC that 6 weeks is early to see a heartbeat. Maybe you could split the difference and schedule at like 6 weeks 3 days? Even then, if you didn't see one, it wouldn't be unusual....  I've seen ladies on TB not see one until 7 weeks and go on to have perfect pregnancies.

Big hugs! Try not to stress too much... easier said than done, I know!

  • I'm sorry you didn't see more, but really there is pretty much no way you should have seen more.  Your betas are strong so that is good!  I am sure everything will be fine. :)

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks 0 days with number 1.  At that time, they told me there was a 50/50 chance of seeing a heartbeat.  We saw it, but it was low.  It had likely just started in the prior day or two.

  • You know, seeing a fetal sac is a good thing!  This early on the measurements are so small that saying he measured you at 5 weeks instead of say 5wk2d is such a small, small, small difference.  I had an ultrasound in my 5th week with Sully and all we saw was the black circle and it was hard not seeing a fetal pole but you just have to hang in there.  I can remember each week I'd go in for an ultrasound and I'd just stare up at the ceiling until the doc said there was a heartbeat.  It was agonizing and then joyful and then the panic and worry would set in again.  All you can do is hope and know that you're doing what you can (which is very little) to have a healthy baby.  What will be will be and no matter what the outcome you'll get through it.  I hate that I know that but I do and I believe it's true for both you and me.

Huge hugs and I'll be praying for a nice strong heartbeat at your next scan.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I think you will have much better measurements etc. next u/s TJ. I had heartbeats at 6w1d with my last pregnancy & 6wk2d this time. I hope they pick up a heart tone at the next appointment & if you can maybe delay it a day or two so you get past 6 weeks.

  • I saw a heartbeat with my daughter at exactly 6w0d, 6w2d with my son and 6w3d with this baby but if you want to not even risk it, wait a couple of extra days when you know there will for sure be something there.  Make the appointment for Monday when you'll be like 6w4d instead of exactly 6 weeks.  I'm confident it's just too early.  I had a scan at 5w3d this time and they just saw the sac with the start of the fetal pole.  Very nerve wracking, but at least you know there is something cooking where it needs to be ;)

  • Hang in there. Sounds like things are on track. My RE would not do any ultrasound before 7 weeks to ensure that when the first one happens that there is a heartbeat. Then there was another one about 2 weeks later, then release to OB. I think weekly early ultrasounds would have driven me crazy. Though I did spend a small fortune in pee sticks while I was waiting for that hearbeat ultrasound.

  • I know it is scary, but you saw what you are supposed to have seen. I did see a HB at 6 weeks with DS and with K&A but all three times it was super slow like it had just started beating. In fact, the RE said iwe probably wouldn't have seen HBs on K&A if the scan had been just a few hours earlier. I think 6 weeks is okay but I would keep it in perspective. You are pregnant!
