First off. What you wrote is rude. Second off my husband is a firefighter/paramedic and an RN.. He is a carseat certified technician, and yes the aap "reccomends" 2 years rear facing, when you get into a wreck and your child's legs are broken because the child's legs were too long, then you would have a 2nd thought about cramming your kid rear facing. Also it states in his car seat books 2 yrs or 20 lbs. rear facing. When my child turned 20 lbs she got a big girl car seat and is front facing. Her legs aren't crammed up against her seat no more and I actually feel safer doing this. I have a high rated safety SUV with all the good airbags.
Obviously you should conform to the limits of your seat. However, I would much rather nurse broken legs than a broken neck. They make seats that RF longer than 20lb. I don't even understand why it would only RF to 20 pounds. Unless it is an infant seat, in which case you can buy a RF convertible seat that has a higher weight limit.

@nwalker0910 my husband is also a firefighter, EMT and they never forward face a car seat until the child is two. Broken legs are better than a broken neck. I hope there are other certified installers at your husbands station as I wouldn't allow him to install my daughters seat (even though she's very tall)!
@Nwalker0910 how was that rude? i thought it was a great article! We were considering putting little B in a front facing seat (we didnt make a decision because we really haven't done much research yet) because she's tall and her legs are long. I've heard the rumors of the broken legs, but I feel much more informed now and she will be rear facing instead now
Thanks for this one! It will speak to my H much better. He has only given half hearted agreement to rf until 2. I need to keep working on him to keep rf-ing after 2.
Umm.. I'm just going to pretend that first response was crazy pyscho and not there
Anyway - to my point - my DH thinks I'm a total nut for wanting to rear face until 4 - he thinks 1 and 20 pounds because thats state law is good enough - HOWEVER - he's lazy So I just won't flip her seat nor say anything about it and I'll likely win
