Stool softener question

I've been trying to avoid more meds while preg -- but after crying on the toilet last night -- it's stool softener time!!!

I've never taken them before -- so I'm a bit nervous! I'm driving a lot for my job over the next two days...and then in VERY public places where I can't gaurntee a bathroom! But...will be home at night! How long so they take to kick in? Can it have the "reverse effect"?

Please let me know your experience! TIA!

Re: Stool softener question

  • Yep you get stool softeners after vaginal birth too (at least I did) I'm not sure I notice the effects but pooping didn't hurt...

  • Talk to your doctor. Mine recommended PeriColace. It's kind of spendy, but works. I take it before bed and when I wake up, I'm good "to go"! For me, it has never created "urgency"... I could feel it coming in advance and always had time or could "hold it" fire awhile if needed.

Stool softeners are different than a laxative. They shouldn't make you have to go any more than normal, just make it easier.

This. Make sure that whatever you buy has only Docusate listed as an ingredient. It is a stool softener only. It's often combined with laxatives so double check the active ingredient list.

  • I take the target brand stool softener & it works great! It won't make you go like a laxative but it makes it easier.
