Nursing: how often?

How old is your LO, and how often are they nursing?

My DD is 5.5 months old, and still nurses every 1.5 to 2 hours. I would say she is a "snacker." If she is very distracted I can get away with 3 hours, but this is rare!

I EBF, she eats solids twice a day, only does 5 to 10 minute nursing sessions, but is not starving by any means! She is one chunky monkey! Love it!

I can't wait to get to every 3 to 4 hours. Don't think that day will ever come! Lol

I think she is making up for her missed calories at night.
Sleeps 12 hours!

What about you?

  • My baby is 5.5 months old. She nurses on average every 2 hours during the day, very occasionally she'll go 3 hours. We haven't started solids yet.

At night she sleeps a 4-5 hour stretch and then nurses 2-4x before morning.

  • DD is 4.5 months old. She nurses about every 3 hours for about 10-15 minutes. She sleeps through the night 10-11 hours. She just started solids so only gets a little once a day.

Same, except my daughter is about four months old.

  • DS is 3.5 months and eats about every 3 hours during the day.  He does a 6 hour stretch at night from 9-3.
  • My 5 month old nurses every 3- 3.5 hours and has been doing so since 3 months. He was every 2 hours and then I read a book that explained that if you can gradually stretch out the time to 3 hours they'll drink more (b/c a bit hungrier) and that's when they get to the hind milk which has more protein and therefore sustains them longer. When they drink very frequently it's more like snacking and they're not getting to the fat/protein content. When I was able to stretch out his times between feedings (I'd distract him with different activities, walks outside, play in the sink, etc.) his naps also lasted longer and he began sleeping longer intervals at night. Win-win all around!

5 months, nurses every 4-5 hours. What is your dd doing that makes you think she is hungry every 2 hours? What is her nap schedule like? Just trying to think of suggestions to spread out the feedings. We don't do solids yet.
  • About 5 months old. He nurses every 2-3 hours, about 5-7 times a day. No solids yet, and he usually STTN about 10 hours straight.

See, if my baby only ate every 4-5 hours he would only nurse four, maybe five times a day. So every baby is different! OP, have you tried feeding baby in a dark quiet room, free of distractions? It's might help her eat a bit more at each feeding and stretch a little longer between them.

  • Team Kimball, that's awesome that that worked for you! Do you remember where you read it?
My girls nurse every 2ish hours, pretty much around the clock. They were sleeping longer but got disrupted by a surgery, so I believe there is a comfort/security/cuddle factor there. They wake for 1.5-2 hours at a time during the day and take naps that last from 30 min - 2 hours.

  • LO is 3 1/2 months and nurses every 2 hours during the day. He goes around 4-5 hour stretches at night.
  • My LO is 3.5 months and nurses more often when we are home and he is awake every 1.5-2 hours or so but he takes a three to four hour nap daily and does a 6 hour stretch at night

  • My little one will be 21 weeks this week and will nurse between 2-3 hours. Around 8pm every night I give him 2-3 T of cereal and a fruit or veggie and he will usually sleep from 9pm-1:30am then be up more often to eat.
  • How does everyone get their LO to STTN? I think that I've figured out if I nurse him on the heavy side he'll go longer...I have to time it right!

  • Hi! It's called "baby wise", the facts and suggestions were good but the book as a whole very strict and focuses on sleep training

4 months, sleeps 9 hours straight at night followed by a 2-3 hour nursing/nap before I get out of bed.
Eats at 6am, 9am and 1130 (around naps) then every 1-3 hours for the rest of the day. He will go longer if we are out of the house. He nurses for about a half hour at 8pm until he falls asleep.
