Natural Birth

Any positive stories for the "you are likely to need a c section" predictions?

I just had my 39 week appt with my MW and she wanted to do a cervical check, I am not dilated, and she said my cervix is soft but most concerning is that baby is still "floating" and has not dropped or engaged at all. She proceeded to say that she was not optimistic at all that I would have a vaginal birth. She said she hated to say it and wasn't taking it lightly but that most people had some dropping by this point and I would likely need a c section.
I am really upset because I felt like there was sill plenty of time to drop but she doesn't think she will. She said she will let me try it vaginally but doesn't want me to go for long and doesn't think ill start labor without being induced.
She recommended seeing a chiropractor to use Webster technique which I have an appt tomorrow am. I am also using epo, rrlt, yoga ball and going to try to increase my walking even more.
Does anyone a) have any suggestions of other things to try and b) have any positive stories to share of a "floating " baby at 39 weeks with natural delivery success?

  • That seems really drastic!  I am by no means an expert, but it seems like the baby still has plenty of time.

To answer your question, you could also try acupuncture.
  • I'm seeing another MW next week for my 40 week appt and hope to get a different answer then but I really like the one I met with yesterday.  Perhaps she was just off of her game or something because she just kept saying her "gut" was telling her that I would not be able to have a vaginal birth.  She made it seem a lot more about the "floating" head then the cervix which I know doesn't mean much,

However, 2 of the 3 midwives at the practice have both said they don't want me going much past 41 weeks so I felt a little cornered about having to schedule an induction date for 41.3 days, but again I will talk to the other MW next week to see her opinion as well.

I just feel really disappointed.  I was feeling so excited and optimistic about the delivery and now I'm stressed and anxious.  I hope that I just spend the next 5 days worrying like a crazy person since I know that is unavoidable and then I can get better news at the appt. on Tuesday.

  • I also side eye your MW.  You have plenty of time - - the last thing you need is added stress of a possible c section over your head as you enter the home stretch.

I was thinking this as well.  There is still plenty of time for baby to drop and engage.  I am surprised that your MW would be concerned at 39 weeks, things can change very quickly. I have no experience with acupuncture of chiropractors but I know that several women on this board have used them and found then beneficial.
I will say that I never felt my LO drop or felt any difference during the end of my pregnancy.  I went into labor one random day out of the blue.  Stay positive and try not to let the discouraging words of your MW affect you.  Your LO has time to drop and engage for L&D.

  • All of my babies were "floating" all the way through to 10 cm. Brats! I've had 4 vaginal deliveries.

  • I'd get a new midwife if she said that. Now she'll have a made-up timer going in her head for how long she'll let you labor, instead of just letting your body do its job.

Plenty of babies aren't engaged until you're in active labor. Sometimes it even takes your bag of waters to break + active labor to get baby engaged. It's all normal.

Anyone that practices medicine on a "gut feeling," whether it's an OB or a MW, is no good in my book.

Inducing at 41w3d is not a problem for me, and was my MW's preference (although I only went to 40/6 before labor started). Definitely start talks now if you want to go to 42 weeks, and expect extra monitoring often during that time.

  • yeah I call bullsht, not being engaged ahead of time says nothing about how labor will or wont go, most S+TM don't drop until labor starts. And her "gut feeling" really has no bearing. What could influence labor for the worse: the stress she caused you with this crap! try not to let it get to  you and definitely seek a second opinion. Just be sure to have a posture that encourages a good position for when baby does engage (leaning forward etc)

  • Thanks ladies, even though I think she's a pretty cool lady, maybe I shouldn't give her to much credit in what my body will be able to do! Going back for my 2nd chiropractor appt tomorrow morning and feeling more optimistic to reach my goal of natural birth experience

Don't stress...that is the last thing you need right now! Know that you can and should ask lots of questions if they start taking induction or c-section.

"Is there a medical issue with me or the baby?"

If not, there is absolutely no reason to think that things won't get moving and you can't have an uncomplicated vaginal delivery. Know that you can say no if they are pushing for interventions before there is a true need for it.

And FWIW, I swear by my chiropractor. I go weekly. And I went in for acupuncture on my due date with DS and my water broke within 24 hours. I can't say for certain that the acupuncture put me into labor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
