TTC after 35

First RE Appt was today- Update

I had my first RE appt this morning. My MD was wonderful. He spent almost an hour talking to my husband and I about fertility and what we have to look at and test to determine a game plan for moving forward. He went over the impressive questionnaire we had to fill out and then answered questions we had. He performed a vaginal ultrasound and walked us through what he was looking at. He told me my ovaries looked great and my uterus did as well. I think only then did I take a deep breath. I was so nervous!

My husband and I both had to have blood work drawn. I had over 8 vials drawn- my husband only 2! So not fair! We are being tested for everything (thyroid, vitamin D, preconception labs) including some genetic tests. I was a little shocked at that but am very anxious to get the results. We were assigned an RN who will be our point person for tests, questions, labs, etc... She said as soon as tomorrow tests will come back and they will begin to call us. My next steps are calling them should I get my period ( I pray I don't!) and scheduling my HSG (day 7-10) and hormone, estradiol and FSH labs (day 3). After ALL that is done- we sit down with the MD to go over the results in detail with him and come up with a plan.

As nervous as I was this am, I am anxious to get going on this crazy, frightening yet exciting process. I thank everyone for their posts. Walking in the office today, I felt I understood and knew quite a bit and that is thanks to everyone on this site.

I hope this will help those of you waiting to see your RE!

For those of you that have gone through it- did the fertility MD/clinic miss anything that I should ask about?

Thanks everyone :)

  • amlrunner: I pray and hope you get your BFP! My MD told me in the past month he had 4 new clients get their BFP while starting the whole process of blood work, tests, etc... I would love for us to be in that category!!

It is overwhelming. I am very nervous about all of this as well. I am trying to be positive thinking at least we will have answers and can develop a plan. It is a step closer to hopefully getting pregnant. I'm a nervous wreck- my husband is the calm one.

Does your fertility MD have an employee that works with insurance companies? Mine did and she sat with us to show us what our insurance covers and what it does not. That was helpful. If not-definitely call your provider. I have Aetna and had to be approved by them for fertility treatments before going to the MD. I was given an ID #. I am a nurse and found out if I have my blood work and HSG done at the hospital I work out- it is covered compared to having it at the clinic where I think they only pay 85%!

Keep me updated! I am sorry we have to go through this but at least we can share together and see if we are missing anything!!

  • Congrats on getting things started.  I know that all the tests seem overwhelming, but it will work out.  I had to get a urine test done.  The kind when you have to collect your urine for 24 hours.  It was weird to hand this heavy bucket of my urine to the tech.

I hope everything works out really well for you as you start this process.  I THINK I am done with all my tests and will be meeting with my RE in early Oct to discuss the next steps.  I am hopeful that means we will be setting up dates for either IUI or IVF (we are going in that direction right away because I have PCOS and am almost 38).
