High-Risk Pregnancy

cervix shortening

im a FTM at 32 weeks 4 days and i had an ultrasound earlier today and found out my cervix is half the length it should be. I was told to set up an appointment with a high risk clinic to be evaluated. Just wondering if anyone else has had a shorten cervix and what the results were. They told me they might put me on progesterone injections or have me get a cerclage done which sounds terrifying. My younger sister had the same problems but they just watched her weekly and she delivered at 36 weeks.

Re: cervix shortening

  • I was told I had a short cervix at 19 weeks.  I had weekly ultrasounds and progesterone suppositories.  I thinned out all the way to 3mm and then around 32 weeks (my last appointment with the maternal fetal medicine doc) I was magically 4cm again.  You are too far for a cerclage.  I believe they won't do them after 24 weeks.  They may just watch you closely for a few weeks and see what your cervix does.  Good luck

  • I was around 28-29 weeks and my cervix was less than 1. I was put on MBR at that time. I had been on progesterone suppositories since 16 weeks due to PTL history. I'm now 35 weeks.

I've never had a cerclage, but aren't you too far along for one?
  • I was put on progesterone suppositories at 23 weeks when my cervix was 1.7 cm. I was admitted to hospital bedrest at 24 weeks and my cervix at 31 weeks is now 7 mm. I brought up a cerclage at 16 weeks but they are more of a detriment than benefit for multiples.

At 32 weeks, I would think it was too late for a cerclage, but your doctor may have a different approach. You may also ask about a pessary. Progesterone would have a great benefit so that's a good treatment. Even if your cervix is shortening, it still needs to dilate and the the birth canal needs to soften which can take quite a while. You didn't say if you are contracting so you may naturally have a short cervix.

  • I thought I'd be too far along for a cerclage but it was something the doctor suggested. I'd rather not have one. I have been having some contractions and sharp pains in my cervix for about a month now.
  • Sorry your dealing with short cervix if is really scary. Alot it the woman on this board have similar experience. I am not really sure why your dr would bring up a cerclage so far in your pregnancy I am assuming he/her didn't realize he/she said that. I also think your late for progesterone injections the suppository is usually given when your that far in your pregnancy. You best bet is bedrest. They also normally stop ultrasound cervical cks at 32wks so don't be surprised if they only do pelvic cks only.

I really think you need to talk to your high risk dr and get everything organized. In the mean time take things easy dont lift anything more then 5lbs and try to stay of your feet as much as possible. If you have any questions please feel free to ask like I said alot of us have first hand experience with short or weak cervix..

Good luck and hope little ones stays cooking a few more weeks
  • Welcome and I'm sorry you had to join us. :(
A lot of us have shortening cervix at various stages of pregnancy and I'm sure we'd all be willing to answer questions if we can. I agree with PP, I think it's too late for cerclage. I think at 32 weeks you are ok ( just my opinion). Follow up with dr weekly. See Mfm. And rest as much as possible! Good luck and keep us posted

  • Thanks everyone for the support. I'm hoping he stays cooking for a few weeks longer. I've been staying in bed and limiting my activities to only getting up to use the bathroom since my appointment yesterday. I hope everyone's pregnancy goes well for them :)
  • I'm 27 weeks and had an emergency cerclage placed at 19 weeks. I've been on progesterone suppositories since week 15.
I'd think that at this point in your pregnancy that you would be too far along for a cerclage. In about 2-3 weeks, most dr's and hospitals wouldn't stop labor anyway. Obviously, you don't want your LO to come that early, but the risks start to outweigh the benefits at that point.
Do you know what your cervical length is?
And, I agree with a PP- talk to your high risk doctor. S/he will probably have a different perspective than your OB does.
Best of luck to you and keep us updated.
