High-Risk Pregnancy

GD doctor scared me

My OB today had to go and scare me. All nonchalantly says to me you know when you have gestational diabetes your risk for miscarriage/stillbirth is higher. Why did he have to say that. Just when I was starting to feel better about the whole GD diagnosis. After he saw my reaction he did say well really only if its not controlled. :-/

Re: GD doctor scared me

  • I bled with my first pregnancy and Dr. Bedside Manners told me that half of all pregnancies don't make it.  I think they desensitize themselves to the point that they don't think anyone else may be bothered by their comments.

Sorry, but weighing 10lbs is not the worst than can happen. The worst than can happen is still birth, though it is very, very rare. However, GD can cause issues with lung maturity, baby's blood sugar, IUGR. Drs aren't telling you this to scare you, they're telling you because it's true. Their bedside manner does often leave something to be desired, I agree with that!

As long as you are well controlled you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Just follow your drs orders and take care of yourself and you and baby should be fine.

Sometimes a gal can follow all the directions to the T and still have problems, dr's can address better then they do were human beings and we deserve not to be frighten we will lose the baby at any minute.

Yes, sometimes you still have problems. You can't prevent everything. But my point is that the drs aren't just telling you this information to scare you. It's their job to make you aware of the risks associated with any condition you have. Unfortunately, one of the (very rare) risks of GD can be still birth. As I said, their bedside manner often leaves a lot to be desired, but you can't fault them for honesty even if their delivery isn't great.

  • The risks are higher with GD, but not significantly so that you have to be worried. My doctor mentioned it to me a few weeks ago, and it was a little scary, but that's one of the reasons why they monitor me so closely. I'm getting twice weekly NSTs now to make sure everything stays okay.
  • I agree that the delivery can be lacking, for sure. However, I've heard ladies (IRL at the MFM I used to use who were in the cube next to me in the monitoring room) say "Well, you can make the 2x a week appointments, but you better not expect me to show up." If you don't take risks seriously, bad things can happen. I am so thankful for the extra monitoring I get, especially at the end, even if it can get tedious. Its all worth it.
