Feeling movement more on one side than the other

About 3-4 weeks ago, I started feeling baby B (who I am told is on my right and head down) a lot - lots of taps and thumps. Then baby A (who I am told is on my left and breech) finally started to chime in and now taps all day and all night long. Now I barely feel B. I will get a tap on the right maybe once a day, sometimes twice. My doctor put complete panic in me that if I don't feel anything for a few hours to call him ASAP. Well...I don't want to over react and I DO occasionally feel *something* - just not very much. Not to mention, how do I know whether they are both hitting me on the left?

Any thoughts/experiences/comments?

Re: Feeling movement more on one side than the other

  • I'm not much help, but I'm having a similar issue. I feel a lot more movement now at 24 wks, but a lot of times its still only on one side. Some days I won't feel anything at all on the other. The sides also switch. I also wonder if they could both be hitting me on the same side. My doctor is the opposite of yours though. I've brought this up and he says "well you shouldn't count kicks until week 28 anyway". So...I never know if I should be worried. Hopefully someone else has some words of wisdom!

  • I am the same way...one is head down and one is breech. I feel 1 more than the other but I try not to worry. I would call your dr if he said to and at least that way you would feel better. I still have a hard time figuring out who is who in there.

  • I am 26w and have felt movement almost solely on my left side.  Turns out, Baby A (Nemo) is head up and kicking in my pelvic region (Thanks, son!) and Baby B (Squirt) is head down, but diagonal so his feet are above Nemo's head.  I feel Squirt punch on my right side very occasionally, but it's almost solely on my left side. I wouldn't worry too much, but that's me.  If you feel concerned, don't ever hesitate.  It's better to be safe than sorry, but it could be that your Baby A is more active that Baby B.

  • I have been feeling a lot more movement on my right too (A). At my last US, B was kicking him like crazy. Poor guys taking a beating from his sister already!
  • This was all super reassuring! It sounds like everyone feels one side over the other.
kimberm0511 - since I am only 20.6 I figure it is kind of early to feel anything at all anyway, so doesn't seem SO extraordinary to not feel anything.

P.s. if I had a doppler/ ultrasound machine I would TOTALLY be checking all day long.
On Sunday we downloaded "My Baby's Beat" app and after 20 minutes of searching, heard B's heart then 10 more minutes of searching found A's on the other side. That definitely eased my worries that day! (MH is out of town with the iphone though!)

  • Totally normal! even now at 25 weeks I feel A move all the time and B I still could go a day or two without feeling a thing. But I got for weekely NST and an U/S every other week and he always has a great heartbeat and is moving a lot but for various reasons his movements are overshadowed by his brothers. I worried SO much about it but after all they checking they have done on him I know he is ok. A few other moms carrying twins in the same weeks as I am have had the same issue. But seriously I was a nervous wreck and still am over their movements I was the same way with my singleton but its so hard when you now have to count two babies kicks. Each week its easier and easier to feel them though if that helps any.

  • Very normal!  Baby A was on my left and I felt her ALL the time and barely felt Baby B (on my right) throughout my pregnancy.  It's funny because now that they are here they are still the same.... Baby A moves a ton and Baby B is much more calm.

  • I mostly felt movement on my left, upper side. It turned out to be A's legs kicking B's legs. Only when B changed position would I feel things on the right.

Our perfect baby boys were born at 36w1d!!

  • I rarely felt my baby A. Freaked me right out when they kept telling me to go to LD if I didn't feel him move 4 times an hour. Turns out his placenta was acting as a buffer. I just had to get to know what was notmal for me. You know yout babies so trust your gut. My LOs will be 3 weeks old tomorrow! :-)
  • I always felt one more than the other. Don't forget they still have lots of room to move around...so they could both be on one side too. I didn't worry too much as long as I felt what I thought was both of them at some point in the day. As you get further along, it gets easier. I use to push on my tummy to get them to move when I noticed I hadn't felt anything in a while. I don't think they liked it haha.

  • This sounds normal to me. I felt Baby A first, and was always worried because I never felt Baby B. Then finally I did ... and it seemed like once I started feeling B, A stopped moving! The funny thing is I know he moves all the time because every u/s A is the active one who won't stay still long enough for his measurements. :) I wouldn't worry unless you go for a couple days without feeling one of them.

Also, I find that if I lay on my side I am more likely to feel the baby on the side that's facing the bed/couch/floor. I don't remember if that was the case for me at 21 weeks but it may be worth a try if you're worried about one of them!

  • I felt movement more on my right where my girl, baby b, was. But, honestly it was really hard to tell who I was feeling for certain. There wasn't much room in there over time and my boy, baby a, had an anterior placenta. I worried too. I just made sure I felt movement in general every day.
  • This is really going to depend on a few things.  Do you have an anterior placenta?  If so, it can realy cushion those movements and make them hard to feel.  And the position of the babies.  I didn't feel one for a couple days and after getting yelled at by the doctor and sent to the hospital for monitoring, it turned out that the baby had turned towards the other baby and I was feeling them both, but in the place I had become accustomed to only feeling the one.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Until recently I felt both (or so I think) mostly on my right. I don't feel the same amount of movement on my left as I do on my right but I feel a little bit now. They both seem to LOVE my right side which is painful.

  • I worried about the same thing.  Both boys were head down but I mainly feel movement on the upper left side.  Told my OB, who started giggling during the US.  She said B was breech now, and that the reason I only felt movement in the one section is because that's where all their limbs are!.  A's legs were all stretched out there and B's legs were flipped up towards his head plus his arms.  I'd say not to worry too much unless you notice a huge change in any movement, then tell the doctor.  (I worried about this with my previous singleton, and in the last week before delivery I didn't feel him for about a day.  Turns out with him he was moving, but I had so much fluid that I couldn't tell, but the monitors could.)
  • It's normal. I felt everything on my upper right side.  It was so bad that I accused Baby A of being my "evil twin" because of the constant kicks and pain.  It turned out that both A and B had their feet on the upper right and Baby B was (and still is) the kicker.

  • I have been wondering the same! I feel what I believe is baby A a lot during the day and rarely feel baby B. Maybe once or twice a day. This makes me feel a lot better knowing its normal :)

  • A few days after posting this, B got back into kicking, and now I feel B way more often than I feel A. A has turned again and is now breach, so I feel A poking me near my bladder area but only occasionally. B is now really kicking, and dh can actually see/feel B's kicks. Funny how they are taking turns being active! B was really active at our last U/S.

Thanks for all of the reassurances, I love this board!!
