She doesn't even TRY new food...argh!

Is anyone else's baby like this?  DD eats almost the same thing every day because she's not a fan of anything new.  Grilled cheese? Nope.  French toast sticks? Nope.  Spinach and cheese ravioli?  Hell no.

She'll lift it up to her mouth, touch her lips to it, and then throw it.  Sometimes she doesn't even get it to her lips!  It's quite maddening.  I feel like I'm wasting a shit ton of food because she doesn't eat it.  I mean, I end up eating it, so...I guess it works out, but I've got pounds to lose, people!

  • I feel your pain. Here's what sometimes works for us, I hold her while I take a few bites of whatever it is. Offer it to her after I eat some. If she bites, awesome. If not, no pressure. I go back to snacking on it, offering it to her now and again. It's irritating as shit when they won't even try stuff, but from everything I've read the worst thing you can do is make a battle out of it, even at this age. Blerg to all the people who are like, "LOL MY KID EATS WHATEVER I PUT IN FRONT OF HER!" GTFO with your luckiness!

  • Same here. Ds will look at it and turn his head. Won't even try it! He loves all fruit and Mac and Cheese other than that its hit or miss. It's so frustrating.

  • That is really frustrating!!  I'm sorry you are dealing with this!  I would just say keep trying.  My LO wouldn't even try eggs, until I put salsa on them!

  • @aggiedaner my kid eats basically whatever I put in front of him but won't pick most things up to actually feed himself. He hates his hands being dirty so anything that will even remotely leave stuff on his hands he won't feed to himself. He just touches it then proceeds to flap his hand around like a lunatic till I wipe it off. I will be spoon feeding him till he leaves for college.

  • W was an adventurous eater from 6-8 months, then he had a 4 month long spell of extreme picky eating, then he went back to adventurous eating again. I didn't do anything special, I just kept offering. If he ate it, cool; if not, whatever. I knew eventually he had to try it.

For 4 long miserable months, he ate nothing but fruit, yogurt, and baby carrots. I wish I was kidding.

  • DS went through a super picky stage but he loved salsa, so we put it on everything. He wouldn't even look at pasta, let alone try it, unless he saw us spoon salsa onto it. We put salsa on toast, vegetables, eggs, pasta, burger, chicken, pancakes :-S, you name it.

Moral of the story is, does she like one thing enough to drown out things she doesn't like for the time being? Something like cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, dressing, etc
  • What does she eat?

    What does she eat?
    Breakfast: apple and cinnamon oatmeal
    Snack: banana and cheese pieces
Lunch: cottage cheese with pureed fruit & spinach pancake
    Snack: graham crackers & cheerios

Dinner is one of three options: whole grain waffles with organic jelly, toast with organic jelly, or vegetable pasta with sauce

Tonight she actually ate some black beans, but hated the organic shells and cheese I made her.  So, she got two waffles.

  • This might be a long shot, but does she use a a spoon? DD is super particular about how the food enters her mouth. Like she won't feed herself with a spoon, and she won't let me feed her with a spoon. But she'll pick it up *off* the spoon, and then eat it. I don't know, she's weird. Might be worth a try.
  • My kid ate black beans for the first time last night too. Wouldn't eat any at lunch today at daycare though. Sigh.

I have success getting her to try things if I'm eating them. Like the black beans. I had them on my plate, so she wants them. Never if they're on her own plate. She likes it if I feed her with my utensils too. (Note: not a second adult-sized spoon, the actual spoon I am eating with)

I haven't figured out how to get her to eat those new foods on her own at daycare so I'm of limited help. It's cheese and crackers or pasta with a diced up meatball every day for lunch for my kid.

  • This seems so mean, but I try to feed him food. Then when he refuses, he starts to cry. Then I hurry, and stick food into his mouth. He usually realizes he likes it. >:)
  • This post makes me feel so much better.  I've been feeling like a terrible mama b/c LO won't eat anything.  Bread, eggs, and cheese are about the only things.  Veggies?  Forget about it.  And she used to eat everything.

I could've written this myself minus the crying and replace with lots of head shaking!

Ha! I might have to try that. It frustrates me so much because I made the shells and cheese, put some on her tray, and she didn't even try them. She picked them up one by one and flung them off her high chair. My dog was super pumped. I ate a few so she could see me eating them and I even put one up to her lip, but she still didn't even want to try it. She gets it honest, though...I eat the same thing almost every day.

  • I agree with maybe giving her a spoon to hold or maybe its a texture thing?  Kids are texture freaks. Whether they like or hate it.
