Babies: 6 - 9 Months

oatmeal

DS is 8 1/2 months old. He's been eating purees and oatmeal since 4 months and is doing so well with it. he's not 100% ready for finger foods yet, but there's a few things he likes. But I've read a lot about people saying they don't give their baby any baby cereal at all, because it's just full of sugar and is just a filler. I've noticed this too and was wondering if you don't give your baby cereal what else do you give them to fill them up? Right now DS eats 1 jar of 4 oz baby food, a big bowl of oatmeal and water to drink out of the sippy cup. Or once a day i'll give him 4 oz of purees and a cup of yogurt. So if you don't give cereal what do you give them to fill them up? :)

  • I'm no expert, but I don't think couscous is as healthy as steel cut oats. I'll take the whole grain any day for healthfulness. I do enjoy couscous though.
  • Food should not be filling them up at all. Cade eats 2-3 meals a day, but his formula consumption has stayed the same. We don't do purees. We've chosen to do BLW. We do regular oatmeal with him (steel cut oats made in the crockpot w/ cinnamon and fruit is how he likes it). Baby oatmeal is just empty calories though and a lor of sugar. It isn't the same as regular oatmeal as it's been refined so much to make a paste for little tiny babies. Formula or BM should be the main staple of their diet before 1 year of age. Food at this age is more about learning how to eat, chew, and textures than filling their bellies. They need the nutrients, fats, and calories in BM and formula to grow appropriately.

  • Jumping in with a quick question. DS gets 32 oz of formula and 6 oz of purees in a 24 hour period, but he is now showing signs that he still hungry. I've read that for his age, I should not be giving more formula, so that leaves me with foods. He isn't engaging in finger foods - really has no interest.

How do I balance the "formula to fill them up and foods for fun" with the thought that giving more formula is not necessarily the right thing?

If he's already getting 32 ounces of formula (which is supposed to be the maximum), then I say feel free to give him more purees (or table food, whichever you're comfortable with) to fill him up.  I think the PPs were just saying that you should make sure you continue to give your LO a significant amount of formula or BM.  Our DD gets about 5-6 ounces of purees three times a day and still drinks 32 ounces of formula.

yeah, same here. DS drinks 28 oz of formula and 8 or 10 oz of purees and normally a decent amount of oatmeal. probably about 8 to 10 oz, same as the baby food. but he still seems kinda hungry after so i give him his sippy cup with ice water in it and that kinda helps him realize he's eaten all of his food... but he's almost 9 months and isn't really engaging in finger foods too much. he';; eat soft stuff, mashed potatoes, noddles, or soft fruits like strawberries or bread. but other than that he doesn't really want to engage in eating finger foods
  • My pediatrician's office has a nutritionist and she meets with families for the 8 month appointment. We met with her on Monday.  I asked her about baby oatmeal specifically and she recommended we feed our twins the baby oatmeal rather than regular oatmeal because of the iron that is added in. We also give our twins plenty of formula (which I know contains iron). Check with your pediatrician and see what they say.

I give my babies oatmeal and banana in the morning or egg yolks, yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit, (or whatever organic baby food in a pouch if we are out), and beans or meat and pureed veggies for dinner. We were only doing breakfast & dinner but she suggested we add in lunch. They eat about 2-3 ounces each for each meal though. They drink from 22-30 ounces of formula per day which is within the guidelines of what they should be eating.
