I let my 8 week old sleep in the swing, but we turn the swing off when she falls asleep so 90% of the night it's not moving. This week we're going to try to start transitioning her to her crib since she's having longer stretches of sleeping time and doesn't NEED the swinging to fall asleep most of the time.
How frequently is he gasping? My DD will occasionally make a loud noise like she's gasping for air, but our pediatrician said it's a normal baby noise. She does it maybe once a night, though and never appears in distress. Any more frequently and I'd talk to your doctor about it.

I think swings and carseats both come with warnings to not make them your main sleeping unit. He needs to get used to sleeping on his back. It is the safest position, and eventually as he gets older he will need to learn how and get used to it.
