Work and OHSS

So I'm on day three today of not going to work w/OHSS including my ER on Friday. How long did you have to stay home from work with OHSS? I would try to go but I could barely drive myself across the street to get a bagel today let alone 30 mins + traffic to and from work...oh AND having to sit in the same position at my desk all day, not happening. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm 4dpER today and don't foresee feeling much better over the course of this week. Today was actually worse than yesterday. What did you ladies do? Should I look into ST Disability for this week and maybe next week?? Uuuuugh I def don't need this added stress :-(

Re: Work and OHSS

  • Honestly I know your RE said drink fluids but that made me so much worse. I felt eons better by drinking only when thirsty. But I did go back to work a few days later I walked so slow that turtles could pass me. The sitting was a relief compared to walking. I felt good after 6 days and great after 9-10.

  • I think looking into the disability would relieve some of the stress about not knowing what to do about work. I have no experience with ohss but I wish you the best and a speedy recovery.

  • Try eating lots of protein.  I was eating tons of eggs and peanut butter.  Try to drink coconut water if you can....it's suppose to help with bloating.

  • Have you looked into getting drained if it's that bad? After 5 days of being pretty uncomfortable my RE recommended I go to the hospital and get it done. I only took a half day off work but I felt absolutely miserable.

@kjf114 I asked about this because the more fluid I have the worse I feel, just like you said. How it was explained to me....What happens is since I'm still "leaky" as I hydrate that leaks, too, so I'm really not getting all the fluid I'm drinking. The other concern about the hydration has to do with blood density and preventing blood clots by staying hydrated. Of course, today I've started having diarreah (ew TMI) every time I eat so now I have to be even more conscious about staying hydrated. Such a catch 22!

@HeatherHam10 My RE actually brought up draining but doesn't recommend it because until my hormones even back out it'll just continue to come back. Unless it gets worse she said its not worth it. Good for you for only taking a half day! I couldn't make the drive even if it was life or death, I can barely walk the 15 steps to the kitchen throughout the day uuugh! I also have some digestive issues now, so that's a def no go. I may try to WFH tomorrow and see how I do sitting at the computer all day. Other than my boss, work doesn't know about IVF so I'd also have to think of a creative response to what's wrong.

  • I was terrified mine would come back but it never did. Hopefully yours will go away quickly on its own. I know how awful it is :(

  • Do you have an HR dept at work? You should be able to speak with them in private/confidence. I'd speak with your benefits person for advice & I'd not only look at ST disability but FMLA as well. I manage a team and have seen both of these used for a variety of health issues (not just childbirth for FMLA). It's your right as an employee to exercise any of these - don't feel guilty for taking the time you need to get back to good health! Good luck! :-D

  • Thanks everyone!  I actually woke up feeling better than I have since before my ER today!  Still no where near 100%, but I got up without groaning in pain haha.  WOO HOO!  I also don't have any food or drink in my system yet, so that could change my tune but hopefully not.  I'm still going to stay home today and try to get some work done, but hopefully this will keep up and I'll be able to go back to the office tomorrow.  I emailed my boss and let her know I was going to try to WFH today, and she was totally fine w/it - thank goodness she's understanding, which I didn't think she'd be since she's about 10 years older than me, single, no kids.  Keep your FX for me that this good trend continues :-)
