Tonsilectomy

Any experience with this? DD is 2.8 years old with Autism and has always had huge tonsils. They are often red and irritated, she's had strep twice, etc. Her pedi gave her a referral to a ENT but told us due to her age they likely wouldn't remove them. So I kind of went in today thinking that would be the case... Instead they said they needed to go. Due to her age they want her to stay overnight. It's at a children's hospital in an "almost home" setting. I just can't see this being anything but horrible. Any words of advice?

Re: Tonsilectomy

  • We just went through this with our 4 year old daughter who has CP. We are on day 7 after having both her tonsils and adenoids out. DD has reflux/vomiting issues that have complicated recovery and the meds seem to sour her poor belly more than usual. We had smooth sailing for the surgery and in the hospital during observation, but day 3-5 were pretty rough.

I'm hopeful that she will sleep better in the long run and be healthier this winter. Hopefully your DD will sail through with no trouble (ENT seemed surprised at how miserable DD has been). The stick on cooling patches (made for fevers) seemed to provide some throat pain relief- at least they helped me feel like I was "doing something" for her. Best wishes for a speedy recovery if you go forward with the surgery!
