Hitting in preschool

I have twin boys who are 3 years old.  One is an angel, the other, well...he isn't.  He got mad at a kid today and hit him with a lego.  Preschool gave him a "red slip" describing the lego incident.  If it were your kid, in your family, how would you handle this in your home?  I have ideas but I'm thinking that you all might be able to think of something super crafty.

His behavior at home is typical for a 3 year old, in my opinion.  He isn't a angel (like I said before) but he isn't a lunatic either.  Occasional fights with his brother over toys etc.  This is the first time he has hit someone other than his twin brother.

Re: Hitting in preschool

  • I think hitting is normal in preschool. Not acceptable, but normal, and the teachers would say the same if you ask I bet, so don't beat yourself up over it. Of course if you see him hit at home he should get some kind of discipline (time out in my house), and you can try to have a conversation about how we don't hit our friends, but really, I don't think it's a big deal.

  • Thanks, BBB... I sort of am beating myself up about it.  Its so weird having one kid who is so "perfect" behaviorally (at school) and one who isn't.  AND I'm not the one who gets to do pick ups and drop offs (work) so I'm not the one communicating with the teacher.  Anyway, thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it.

I think at 3 kids are too young for delayed punishment. So if the incident happened at 9am at daycare, it's not going to mean anything to talk to them about it at 6pm. I would ask the daycare to inform you to watch for a pattern but I wouldn't personally do anything about each specific red slip- I would leave that for the daycare person.

I do however always talk to DS1 about hitting people and how it hurts people. At our house if you hit someone, that person goes away and you can't play with them anymore. It's like a reverse time out...it works well becaus DS doesn't sit still.
