The YMCA

For those that have a membership. How do you like it? What about for the kids? I'm thinking of getting a membership for me and the kids. I really would like to go work out and I think Rosie would benefit from the classes and such. I just wanted to make sure that it really is worth the 75$ a month for us to go. TY

Re: The YMCA

  • If you use it weekly its definitely worth it. They have so many different classes and programs. We have been members for years and I don't know what we'd do without it. It's our source for exercise, fun, childcare, and preschool. You can do a tour first and meet whoever runs the childcare part of it too.
  • $75/month is a lot less than my family membership was when I had one. I guess that varies by location..? Also keep in mind that the kid classes aren't free even with a membership - just cheaper than without one. I canceled mine after a few months because I wasn't going enough to justify the cost. Also was very disappointed with childcare room and couldn't trust it again after they fed my daughter food she was highly allergic too even though I'd explicitly explained her allergy and told them not to feed her (it was a freakin hour, she didn't need a Snack). Obviously that stuff will also vary by location/personnel, but I've read similar horror stories on here about the Y child watch rooms (they aren't a licensed daycare, it's just volunteers), and I know you've mentioned that your DH is very particular about who watches your son (nobody but you guys, right?) or maybe you weren't even considering the childcare room, so if not, nevermind!

Well, I know that the swim classes and toddler classes like tumbling and dance are included in the price. As for Childcare we'd only be sending Rosie there to play in there giant play place. It's like a Discovery Zone in the child watch area. I only would get Cade a membership to do mommy and me swim classes and to take him to their awesome kiddie pool. Ours is very new, it was just opened in the last 2 years.

  • Is there an initiation fee? Sometimes the ones around here run specials where there is a $0 initiation.

-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
  • It was an extra $100 a month I just couldn't justify.

  • Wow, that sounds way better than our Y! Swim and dance classes are extra at ours, and our filthy child watch room consisted on some bins of old barbies and a few old PCs.

Yes, there is a 100$ registration fee for us. They only run the 0$ registration fee once a year in January.

@WYEngTeacher Our Y is really really nice. I've been in it before for meetings and parties.

  • I think Y's vary wildly. The one near my house wouldn't be worth it, but the one near work is awesome, and LO just started going to preschool there too. Our membership is also great because it is good for any of the 12 metro Y's, so I can go to the trashy one near my house just to hop on the treadmill, but go to the one near my work for classes and stuff.

  • We are members and really like it. With that being said we have one of the newer, nicer facilities. I went to a different one since they had better hours for family swim one day and was totally grossed out.

  • Definitely take a tour. We love it! The childwatch program is nice. Make sure you check out the hours and other extras. Keep in mind there are taxes too. Our membership is $80, but $88 total with taxes.

And yes, most kid classes you still pay for, but you get a lower cost. The exercise classes are included. Access to the pool is too.

  • Our child care area is nice. They have a finger print scanner when you drop off and pick up. Ours has a sliding fee schedule based off income. It's one of the only gyms around here that has child care so that's where I go.

  • I have heard wonderful things about the Y in Silverdale :) I think it will totally be worth it! Itsounds like you guys need tto get out of the house more anyway so this is a good opportunity for that.

You must live really close to me. However, yes the Y in Silverdale is pretty awesome. I'm going there in Thursday for a babywearing class.

  • Varies by location.  I love ours.  Childcare is free and pretty good.  Our classes for kids cost extra but it is extremely reasonable compared to other swim, soccer, gymnastics etc.  My husband and I both exercise there several times per week, i use the babysitting, and my kids take lots of classes.
  • I love ours. The childcare is nice enough- I wouldn't pay a whole bunch more, but it has saved my sanity on more than one rainy day. We have classes included in our membership, but not swimming or tumbling, more like music and toddlersize. If you know someone who is already a member, you can both get a 20% discount.

  • @Nana_osaki06 Silverdale/Bremerton is a little less than an hour and a half from me but I used to live in Seabeck and Ava Nichol's pedi is in Silverdale :) So we are in the area at least every few months. I also have a friend from high school who lives in that area now because her DH is in the Navy.
