Chores for a 3 1/2yo

I am making a chore chart for my DS. He already puts his clothes in the hamper, puts away his toys and books, puts away the silverware, and helps with clean up of the dinner table. I would like to give him some daily chores but I am drawing a blank. So what does your kiddo do to help contribute to the house?

Re: Chores for a 3 1/2yo

  • My kid does about the same as yours. We just added sweeping her play room and making her bed though.

Sounds like what I would've suggested. Set table, clear table, clean up toys, put own clothes in hamper, put own clothes away in drawers (it will probably be messy!).Help sort clothes and put them in the wash, help in the vegetable garden, bring in the flyers, feed the dog.
ETA: she isn't made to do all of these things all of the time. I should say "help" and "sometimes".

No? She's around when I'm making supper and setting the table so I ask her to put the forks on the table. When she's done breakfast at the island she puts her dishes in the sink. When I help her get undressed I hand her her clothes and ask her to put them in the hamper. If she's around when we're putting away clothes she wants to put her clothes in her drawers. She loves to help shove clothes in the washer and dryer and help in the garden (picking beans, peas and tomatoes). If there are flyers on the step she will just pick them up and bring them in. And when we get home from work/daycare she knows the dog gets fed so she does it.

    Is that so crazy?

And as I said, she's not made to do these things, we don't have a chore chart. But these are ideas for things toddlers can do.

  • We don't have a chore chart, but Nora helps with some things. She likes to feed the dogs, put things in the trash can, pick up her toys or books and put them away, wipe up messes with a paper towel etc.. Nothing structured yet- we just get her to help out when we see an opportunity.

For mobile users, she'll be 2.5 in October.

  • Damn, my kid is a slacker.  He throws his pull up in the trash before his bath, does that count as a chore? lol

Yeah, I'm lucky, she loves to help. Hopefully it lasts through her teens.

  • My daughter loves to help out. She loves to help me bake and cook (crack eggs, pour sugar/flour into the bowl, mix the pancake mix). She sets the table with dishes, forks, knives, etc. If there is a mess on the floor, she will grab the dustpan and sweep the floor. She will put the trash bin back in the cabinet under the sink. She picks up her toys, picks out her own clothes, puts away socks and underwear, help put groceries and toiletries away, help put the towels in the linen closet, and will assist me putting the laundry in the dryer.

I don't ask her to do much but clean up her toys, but if the opportunity to help me in any way comes up, she is the first one to say "i'll do it!"

Man, I apparently need to get my kid to work.  @Nana_Osaki06 Sweeping the play room as in vacuuming or with a broom?
I got her a child sized broom and dust pan. She does an OK job. I don't expect perfection, but she does do it. Rosie does "chores", but I do stuff along side her. She picks up her toys and put them in the correct bin (I have labels on the buckets), she dresses herself, puts on shoes and slippers herself, throws away trash, puts the silverware into the dishwasher, sets and takes down her table, ect. It's just part of normal life, so there's no chart. She just does it cuz she wants to copy mommy or help.

  • The only thing he has to do is set the table/clear his plate when he is done and pick up toys. He likes to help unload the dishwasher, sweep, cook and wipe down the counters after, throw stuff away for me, take the trash/recycle can out to the curb and back up again, get the mail.

  • DS has certain things he already does - cleaning up his toys, putting his dirty clothes in the hamper and clearing his plate after eating.  He is pretty good about doing them, rarely has to be asked.  He asks to help clean on a regular basis, so I just kind of give him chores as we go along.  He will help put up his clothes, put up silverware from the dishwasher and help sort things in the recycle bin.

  • The only reason I was thinking of doing a chart is because DS loves stickers and I thought it would be a good way to get him into a routine. He loves helping and all of this would be on a reward system only (no punishment for not doing ie: forced). If it doesn't work out the way I hope then we will scratch the chart. Thanks for the ideas!
  • We have a chart for some things, but it's all behavior oriented. So, things like 'Please and Thank You', 'Eating Dinner Nicely', 'Quiet Time', ect. We did it to reward her for good behaviors. This has helped us curb bad ones, she loves her stickers.
