Baby Hammock or bassinet?

I bought a PB bassinet (CL) it's really cute and we had planned for the baby to be in our room for awhile in it, but it doesn't seem too functional.

I read the reviews of this baby hammock, sort of like the Amby but without the price tag

and it sounds amazing!!

Anyone use a swig like this one?

Re: Baby Hammock or bassinet?

  • I'd do the swing in a SECOND over the bassinet. Faith never really liked her bassinet, but LOVED her swing.

  • That swing looks cool!

Max hated the bassinette! I couldn't even put him in it long enough to get dressed... he'd scream his head off!

besides being oh so PB cute! it doesn't even look comfy to me either LOL maybe i should sell it back on CL. I have a regular swing with music etc, this would be more for sleeping/nights

  • We used a bassinet in our room at first.  Bean always got too stimulated by the swing- it worked for sleeping for maybe a week.

  • Sabrina slept in her bassinet for about a month, then she switched to the crib. She used her swing a lot for first few months, but not to sleep in. I personally wouldn't want to use a swing in leiu of a bassinet or something else (stationary) to sleep in, since that can be a hard habit to break and not something I wanted to tackle if I didn't have to.

I second this! It is really easy for a child to get attached to that rocking motion and then NEED it to fall asleep, which can be a hard habit to break a baby of. I look at it this way anything I don't want to have to do when Riley is 9 months or a year I try not to start doing now.

  • I think some of the previous posters are responding to the question of using a swing vs. a bassinet, whereas I think you are asking about using a hammock vs. a bassinet.  April posted about this hammock a while back, and from what I can tell, it looks just like an Amby hammock, but better looking (Amby's are super plain!).  We used an Amby for both kids, and LOVED it.  Still love it for that matter, as Spencer still uses it for all naps and bedtime (he's almost 6 months).  It's awesome - I can't say enough good things about it, and it's definitely on our "must have" list of baby gear.

So if it were me, I'd absolutely sell your cute little PB bassinet and buy an Amby or the BRU knock-off.

That said, I bought my Amby on CL and see them there all the time.  I think babies either love it or hate it, so some people end up selling theirs nearly brand new if it doesn't work out for their kid.  It's worked wonders for both of my kids, but like anything BR, it all depends on the kid and something that is fabulous for one kid might not work for another.

Yes I am asking about the bassinet vs hammock : )

Thanks for your response about the hammock, it's really helpful! How was your transition from the hammock to the crib?

  • Our baby refused to sleep in the bassinet when we brought him home.  It was like he was allergic to it - set him down in it and he was immediately crying!  Thank goodness a fellow nestie offered to lend me her Amby hammock.  Baby E has been in it ever since.  The only problem now is getting him to transition to the crib... I'm afraid it's going to be a challenge!  If I were to do it again, I might try an arm's reach co-sleeper (flat surface) and try to make the mattress nice and comfy (without being too soft and therefore unsafe) because that may be easier to transition from.  But so far the Amby is still working, and the nice thing is you can take it with you wherever you go so the baby always has a familiar sleep environment.
  • Ha ha.  Well, I can't speak to the transition yet as I haven't even attempted to have him sleep in a crib yet.  Mainly because he's doing so well in the Amby.  I'm planning to start trying once my older one goes back to school in January for at least his naps.  He doesn't yet roll over from back to stomach, but once that happens, I think that's when he has to be in a crib.

  • Oh, get the hammock!  J still has yet to be able to sleep flat but sleeps great in the amby hammock.  I confess, J slept in his swing for months, but went right from swing to hammock without a fuss.  We have a cradle that he never used and a beautiful crib that has yet to be used, but the hammock is great.

  • I registered for that hammock and received a bassinet.  We'll see if the Nerdling likes the bassinet; if not, we'll be buying that hammock!
  • Thanks for the replies. I bought the hammock, babies r us had free shipping today. I'm going to keep it in the box and if he doesn't like the bassinet, I have the hammock ready!
