High-Risk Pregnancy

27 weeks with GD.... Needing a partner to help

I have no idea about anything involving GD with my first child my doctor assumed I had it but we didn't take it very seriously becaus do never could complete my glucose test. Now with this pregnancy I failed the test and am definitely worried that I won't be able to change my diet because of my pickiness. And i hate needles and am so afraid of poking myself. I ask my husband if he would do it for me but I got a flat out no. Anyway in going to try to do things differently especially since I have blackouts regularly and would just like someone who has been through it or is going through it to help if I have questions.

  • I was afraid of needles when I started also. Will your husband let you test him? that's what I did at the start, for some reason it was easier to prick myself after I tested someone else, with a different needle of course. I'm pretty picky also, but the diet isn't too bad. A lot of it is combining stuff you may already eat, but in different ways. Also, don't try to be too rigid on what food is "breakfast" food and the like. For instance I hate eggs, and for like three weeks I try to stomach them as my morning numbers required lots of protein and a tiny amount of carbs. Now I just eat stuff I like, for instance this morning I had leftover chicken and peppers. Once you get started it becomes easier.

  • Your husband won't be there to stick you every single time you eat. I believe I needed it 4x a day last pregnancy. I was also scared but trust me you quickly get over it and its no big deal. The best way to do it is to just do it fast instead of easing it in. The nurse should practice with you and help you learn how to do it.
  • I'm 30 weeks with GD, I'm no expert but happy to help any way I can. My dad is diabetic so I ask him tons of questions! For me I've found I only have to be super strict at breakfast and so far been able to manage it without medication. It takes a fair amount of trial and error to figure out what your body needs and everyone is different. The ladies in this forum have been super helpful too!!
As for the needles and sticking yourself, I literally faint when having my blood drawn but it seems to be ok when I don't look at the needle. So I hit the button and look away for a second. After the first week or two of testing 4 times a day it gets easier and you get used to it. :)
  • Hi, I wish we didn't have to welcome you to this hell :) I am really scared of needles , I get shaky, clammy and anxious. When people said that the finger pricking wasn't a big deal, I seriously couldn't understand how they would say that. Well, I'm proof that its is nothing now, I've only been doing it a week. My fear is that no matter what , I will have to go on insulin and I already know that I can not inject myself. This GD thing is horrible and I can't wait for November when I can eat the foods I enjoy without worrying about a number being too high.
