What style??

I have a son named Abram. I love his name and it suits him amazingly. We plan on having more children but everything my husband and I come up with is shot down. So I have a question, what style would you consider the name Abram? I already know it's biblical because that's what he's named after. Disregarding the biblical association (I am not necessarily sticking with a biblical theme but I want my kids' names to go well with one another), what does Abram say? EDT: For suggestions if it helps, our last name is Roth, I dont like anythig overly popular, and for girls and my husband likes really girly names.

  • Amish?  LOL

Frankly, Biblical is the only bucket I'd put this in.  Anything else from the Old Testament would go well. Rachel, Isaac, Abel, Noah, Malachi, Sarah/Sarai, Miriam, Rebecca, Levi, etc...

LOL ...darn I should have mentioned I already know it sounds Amish.
A lot of "traditional" biblical names have already been used up by family and friends.

I just voted on the name list in your signature

Rowena and Roman were my two favorites, though I liked most of the names you listed.

Abram says Biblical to me but you don't need to stick with that theme. Just so long as your next kid isn't named Zaedon or Ava or something completely different in style from Abram..

Well thank you! I appreciate that. Those two are two of my favorites but I'm not sure that they work all that well with our last name, or if they even sound that great with older brother Abram. :/

I have Abram on my list, but not because of what some would call biblical or Amish—neither of which have anything to do with me. I love it because it fits (IMO) my old man, but not frumpy style.

Abram, Miles, Ewan, August, Calvin, Theodore, Oscar, Archie, Arthur, Peter, Henry, Ellis, Russell, Avery, Jasper, Abel, Felix, Simon, Percy, Edwin, Arlo, Reuben
I honestly like every single name you suggested except for Avery and Percy. Unfortunately, I know for a fact that my husband would say no to almost all of them. I will run them by him anyways. Thanks!

While I do get the biblical vibe, Abram to me also falls into a "cool" category without being trendy or trying to hard.  It's just a great underused name IMO. I don't think a name that is not biblical would make a bad sibset either.

Very good assumption. I think I can agree. Wonder if this category is difficult to think up names for...?

British Baby Names Blog has it along side:

NOTW "Reuben" — Jonas, Asher, Tobias, Jasper, August, Gabriel, Gideon, Amos, Tobin, Simeon, Julian, Emmett, Rowan (G: Miriam, Eloise, Julia, Iris, Delia)

NOTW "Jemima" — Rupert, Felix, Arthur, Hugh, George (G: Tabitha, Beatrice, Emmeline, Constance, Cecily, Sylvia, Lois, Violet, Iris, Genenvieve)

Quirky Biblical (Name List) — Asa, Boaz, Cornelius, Darius, Enoch, Ezra, Gideon, Ira, Jonas, Lucius, Matthias, Moses, Saul, Silas, Simeon

That's extremely helpful! I must not be picky because I like just about every name on there. I KNOW my husband wont like a bunch (most likely all). I am going to try to get him to "see the light" so to speak, because these names are great.

What's funny is that Abram was going to be named Iris if he was a girl. ;)

Asher is nice but our last name is Roth. Idk if you know who Asher Roth is but I wouldn't set up my kid like that. Haha!

  • I think of Abram as a very traditional, biblical name.
High School English teacher and mom of 2 kids:

    DD, born 9/06/00 -- 12th grade
    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • I think of Abram as a very traditional, biblical name.

Yeah that's the obvious choice but I was looking for something other than that

  • Abram feels old-fashioned and gentlemanly to me. I could see him having brothers with names like Sebastian, George, Edmund, Charles, Isaac, Frederick, James, etc.

Are you looking for girls' names, too? I think most every classic girl's name sounds nice with Abram. You could go biblical with Lydia or Rachel, or old-fashioned like Vivian or Evelyn. I think a wide range of girls' names work, as long as they're not too trendy/crazy.

  • I really dislike anything relatively popular. I'm glad you think other old fashioned names would work. I guess Abram feels 'ancient' to me so when I think of classic names I thought they didn't click as well. Yes, I'm looking for girl's names too. My husband likes really girly names.

I know a couple who have two young sons that are named Abram and Jaxon.  To me, it's a very odd sibset.

I would never do Jackson let alone Jaxon. I won't do an overly popular name.

  • I could see Abram having brothers named Elias (Eli) and Boaz (Bo).  They are all sort of obscure Biblical names that exude quirkiness (IMO).

For girls:  Sarah, Lila, Rebecca (Becca), Rachel

Those girls names are nice but I'm so picky. They're too popular.
Elias is nice but I don't like Eli. I LOVE Boaz. I suppose it was a post like this that I needed. Just a little more push to go for it. ;)

Abram is the name of my best friend's son & I love it!  Cute & not overused.  Her husband's name is also biblical: Jeremiah.  Other friends of mine used: Cecilia & Simeon (my DH spend the 1st year of this kid's life calling him "Simon" & I kept having to remind him that it was pronounced "Sim-ME-on", which he would then say was stupid).

I know you said you weren't sticking to the biblical thing, though, so other names that would "go" w/Abram, IMO, are: Nolan, Micah, Lucas

Sorry if this isn't what you're looking for - I wasn't totally sure!

Those names are ok but you're right, not totally what I was looking for. My husband's name is a weird biblical name too; Zadok. I suppose that's what draws me to the very uncommon biblical names, or just rare names in general.

EDT: Funny, my sister is naming her son (arriving any day) Lucas. It makes me happy to hear that you think they go well with one another. :)

  • I just looked at your baby names in your poll - I think they are all unique - some I like, some I don't... I do think, however, that the name Abram would work w/pretty much any of them except: Rowena (HATE) & Boaz (not even sure how to pronounce).  My favorites are Iris & Thaddeus (Tadd is a super cute NN).

My husband's favorite is Iris. And Thaddeus is one of my favorites too. ;)

Boaz is pronounced bow-az (like the word 'as').

  • I like quirky names & I love that it's a sort-of tradition since your DH has a lesser-known biblical name.  The only thing I would worry about is your DS having to spend every first day of school listening to his name be mispronounced, etc.  I grew up w/a very weird last name & it is frustrating to have no one ever pronounce it correctly.

Ha - it is good that your sister is naming her son something that will go well w/your DS.  I'll have to let my sister know this is a requirement, haha.

My husband was homeschooled, but aside from that his name is mispronounced frequently. I think it somewhat annoys him but I know he likes that it's different. I never thought him liking the most uncommon biblical names might have had something to do with that. I'm going to ask him about it. Nice thinking on your part!

Boas and Boaz are not so far apart, and Boaz would probably be mistaken, but a quick correction and I don't think it's likely anyone would forget how to say it. But I am thinking about that and it does play a roll in my decision making. For whatever reason I cannot bring myself to dislike the name!

Booker, on the other hand, is not getting as much as a warm welcome as Boaz. Interesting because I thought it would be completely opposite.
