pacifier

Ok our almost 3 yr old still uses her nummy ie pacifier for nap and bedtime.  She also uses it in the car bc of motion sickness and she hates the car.
We tried to loose it last weekend and she flipped out. I mean she got so upset I couldn't bear to see her like that.
Her mummy is so important to her- when it's time for bed she's like, "my nummy!"  I know I could loose it or the fairy thing or talk to her but she is so attached to it.  I'm so scared it's going to be too hard for her.  Any advice?

Re: pacifier

  • I've heard cutting off the tip little by little till there is nothing left works for some kids.
  • You could start by poking a pin hole in them some there is still some sucking but not as much and then go to cutting the tips and telling her they are broken. DD started biting through hers. As she bit through them, I told her they were broken and had her throw them away and then I didn't buy anymore. I had her throw out her last binky. I know some moms that have taken their kiddos to a build a bear workshop and have their kids but their pacis in there. That way they also get a new luvie.

We did this and as soon as I did it, my daughter took it out of her mouth and threw it on the ground.  I tried to put it back in her mouth and she told me it was broken!  The first few nights/days were hard but don't give up!
  • One day I just decided to end the pacifier.  I cut the tips off all of them in the house.  When DD asked for it I told her it was broken (broken is something she really understands vs. the fairy).  She took it from me, put it in her mouth, made a said face and said "it's broken, give me another".  I gave her another and it was also broken.   This totally worked!!!!!!  For a few days she would sadly say "baby broken" (she called it baby).  But then she soon forgot about it.  No issues with sleep or anything.  I was amazed it worked!!!

We did the same thing. There were no tears or anything. DS looked really sad when he realized his last paci was broken and he still plays with them while falling asleep, but doesn't put them in his mouth. Worked great! I wish I would have done it sooner!

DD was totally attached. She only had it for nap and bedtime, and only at home during those times (napped fine without it at DC and at grandparents' houses). A few started tearing, so I explained that it was broken and had her throw it away. About three weeks later she came out and said all her pacis were broken (even the ones that weren't) and threw them all away. A little rough that first night because she wanted them back. This was last weekend and she'll occasionally ask for them and I just remind her that she threw them away.

  • My SIL bought a genie lamp and had her son (almost 3) put all his pacis in it and wished for three toys. In the morning, the pacis were gone and the toys were by the lamp.
