Reflux and congestion

Wow, it has been forever since I've logged into TB, but I am at my wits end and looking for some Bump wisdom!

Our daughter has been congested since birth (either always sounds stuffy or we're sucking long strings of clear mucus out of her nose multiple times a day... nice huh?) Her ped has always said it's normal, but last week gave her a prescription for Zantac saying sometimes reflux can cause congestion.

DD is otherwise happy, but her night wakings are out of control because for 4 months now I go in and she needs her nose suctioned out. We do the humidifier, Nosefrida, saline, elevated bed, etc but she's still congested.

So my question.... any other reflux mamas experience this? And how long did it take for the acid reflux meds to help with the congestion? We would like to sleep train her soon (since it worked so well with DD1) but I don't want to do it when she's so stuffy so I'm hoping Zantac is the answer we're looking for.

Thanks :)

Re: Reflux and congestion

  • Ella had this issue since birth..dr was never co concerned..I asked again at her previous visit and she said everything is clear she just as very large adenoids and that's why she sounds that way

  • My dd(4.5 mo) is the same way, but hers isn't very bad and has actually gotten a lot better over the last month or so. I mainly notice the congestion when she gets a bath or is laying on her back. My pedi said when they start to sit and are upright more often that it should clear out. I was always sucking out her nose when she was younger, but I heard that if you do it a lot you can irritate their nasal mucosa, causing it to actually produce more mucous. Not sure if its true or not...
  • Our son had severe congestion and at first we were told that it was due to the reflux....he also has a milk protein allergy.  He was on zantac and several different formulas until we went on Elecare which is working.  He has been on the elecare formula now for since the middle of June and he gradually got better...and so did his congestion.  I too was waking in the night to clear him out because he couldn't breath.  My GI specialist told me to start weaning the zantac because he believed that it was due to the allergry and told me that refluz won't really cause that much congestion.  We have stopped reflux meds entirely and he also no longer has issues with congestion, the hypoallergenic formula is working and I also have a now happy baby.  So maybe the congestion could be allergies? Have you looked into that route?
