Sharing a room with LO

My SO and I currently live in a one bedroom house. We probably will not move to a bigger place until after LO arrives and are going to be sharing a room with the baby for the first few months. Since I am a FTM and lack experience, I'm having a difficult time deciding what furniture to get for the baby. I want utilize the limited space we have as best I can but I'm not sure how to do this?? I really only have space for one or two pieces of small furniture. I would love to start buying things and registering but it's overwhelming since I don't know what the heck i'm doing!

Anyone else have experience making a nursery in a small space? Or shared a room with your LO? Or just have an idea of what I could do? I'm open to any thoughts/ ideas/suggestions!!

Re: Sharing a room with LO

  • You could get a mini crib for your room - then do you have extra storage space for LO's clothes, etc? You could even get a shelving unit if you didn't want to get a big dresser until you have a bigger place?

  • DS slept in our room for the first 4.5 months. He slept in the bassinet part of the PnP. His crib was set up in his actual nursery. If you are tight on space, I would got the PnP route with a dresser for LO's clothes, with the changing pad on the dresser top.

  • We let our daughter sleep in our room for the first 6 months before putting her in her crib and will do the same with this baby. A bassinet and a small, three tier dresser should be fine. At least, that worked for us!
  • We shared a room with DD1 on and off for her first year. For the first 4 months, she slept in a rock'n'play. She's been in a pack'n'play ever since and is 18 months now. We'll probably go from that to a toddler bed honestly.

  • A friend of mine recommended the Arms Reach Cosleeper. She got the full size model because it can be used as a pack n play. She loved it when she was nursing the baby.

We used a bassinet (only for a few weeks) then a rock n play type chair and when that didn't work any longer (for baby #3, in a two bed condo) we got a childs size air mattress, with higher sides, so my son couldn't roll off. It worked perfect!

We also had an extra closet in our master that we added extra (high) shelves to and put the changing table as a dresser in there on the lower half. We also got a cube shelf unit (for those canvas cubes) for extra clothes and blankets. It worked out really great. We didn't really need a ton of extras for his newborn things.

  • DS was in our room until 15 months and DD was in the same room with DH and I until 20 months.  Really all you need (if you don't bed share) is a crib.  With DS I got a changing table and put it in our living room.  His clothes lived in a few small baskets on the shelves of the changing table.  With DD her clothes lived in baskets on our window ledge and dresses hung in our closet.    We had a 1 bedroom apartment when our first was born so we really focused on not accumulating unnecessary baby gear.

  • Baskets work great! We put all of ds clothes in different baskets at first, and hung some nicer stuff in the armoir. We used a cradle (dh's when he was little) and then a pnp.

We used the PNP. It had a little attachment on top for a changing station and one beside it like a little bassinet. We kept his clothes in his nursery in a drawer but kept a few extra in the bottom part of the PNP incase he got poop or pee on his clothes. That way we didn't have to go to his room in the middle of the night. We also stored the diapers that didn't fit in the diaper attachment thing on the side down there. Only so many diapers can go in that attachment.

I plan on doing the same! This time except get a small bookshelf and place beside it and put decorative baskets of clothes in it so I won't have to bend so far down in the PNP to get them.

We're in a 1 bedroom apartment at the moment and moving isn't an option until we find a house and buy it (we just moved in April, before I found out that I was pregnant and I don't want to move another time unless it's into a house)

We will use a rock and play for the first few months. We'll also have a crib in our room (it's the Gulliver from Ikea, which is a few inches smaller than a "normal" crib, but it fits the same size mattress and it converts into a toddler bed)

Luckily we do have a large bedroom so we'll also have a changing table with baskets on the shelves for clothing etc. And we have a tall bookshelf type of thing that I'll be converting into something like this for LO:

If I had to cut anything for lack  of space, it would be the changing table since there's so many other places to change a diaper.

  • We only have three bedrooms and since this is our fourth, we will be sharing our room for a while. DD1 & DD2 share a room and DD3 has her own right now. DS will sleep in a bassinet for the first few months and then he'll sleep in a pack n play with a mattress. Once he is on the same sort if schedule as DD3, they will share a room.

  • You all have a lot of really good ideas. I love the idea of making a changing table on top of a dresser and I'm thinking we will wait on a crib until we have a bigger place and go with a bassinet or PnP. I have a much better understanding of what I need to do so thanks!
