Babies on the Brain

SO many questions!!

Brand new to this so bare with me!

My husband has been bugging me for awhile with this baby business. He really wants a baby and its not that I don't, I just always envisioned things being just perfect when I decided to have a baby. Now I'm a realist and I know thats nearly impossible, but I did at least want to have a lot more accomplished when I decided to TTC. So I need some advice on pre-pregnancy steps.

It's really important to me that I try to get in good shape before I get pregnant. I plan on natural birth and so I am sure good abdominal strength is important? Any recommendations?

I have had crappy experiences with vitamins. They make me tired and I have never taken them regularly. Ive seen the doctor about this and I am seemingly perfectly healthy. Does anyone know of mild, organic, vegan, etc vitamins that you would recommend?

I am also looking to tweak my diet in any way that would be beneficial to my baby. Any recommendations there? I have heard mixed things about consuming soy while pregnant.

Any other advice is welcome. I feel like there is so much to prepare for and its a little overwhelming to me. Thanks!!

Re: SO many questions!!

  • I'm copying my answer on prenatal vitamins from below: I take New Chapter prenatals and a Nordic Natural DHA supplement. These are whole food based and organic, which are important to me. You have to take it 3 times a day which sounds like a lot, but your body can't absorb everything if you take all your daily vitamins once per day. You can also take them on an empty stomach...which is awesome. However perfectly healthy babies on all kinds of vitamins, so you really probably can't go wrong. The ladies on the natural birth board can give good advice on prenatal exercises for a natural birth.

  • I started working out about a month before getting pregnant.  Wasn't planned that way, just happened.  Once I knew I was KU, my trainer was one of the first to know (well before work, and probably even my parents).  We just made a point to focus on things that would make carrying the baby, and then labor and delivery, easier (core work, balance, etc...).  I ended up having a c-section (found out while in labor LO was breech), but I think it still helped with my recovery.  Can't help with the vitamin question.  I just took the one-a-day prenatals.  As to diet, that's up to you and the research you choose to do on what's important to you.

As you already pointed out, nothing will ever be "perfect," but if you are considering TTC, then go ahead and look into changing the diet, starting some vitamins, and starting to exercise.  There's no telling how quickly or not you will get KU, after all, and nothing you listed are major barriers to starting to try (saying you don't think you're mentally prepared, etc...).
