Ethnic food and GD

Hello ladies, Something i have been wondering about since being dx with GD is, what about us moms who are ethnic and cook the food we've grown up on. I'm Mexican and I have not been told anything about Mexican food. The diets they give us are so plain and basic, I really want to make the food I'm used to having ( sans rice and too much tortillas). We cook Mexican, Italian and Filipino food, so I don't know what to do. Any of you ladies having this issue or have advice on how to adjust it to get good numbers? Btw- I don't see my dietician until the 16th, I will definitely ask her too. Thanks ladies!

  • I always err on the side of eating much more protein than carbs. So I will eat a lot more meat than rice. Watch your sauces to make sure there isn't too much sugar in them. Did you get a glucometer? I test two hours after each meal and refine how I eat based on that feedback.

  • I wasn't given a specific diet, just an amount if carbs to stay under. From what I understand, I can eat whatever food I want as long as I am modifying what I eat to fit within those carb ranges. So you should be fine to continue eating ethnic foods with some modification. Like pp said, eating a good amount of protein helps also and watch sauces. It's a lot of hit and miss at first, and everyone is different.

  • Yeah i unfortunately have the glucometer ( or house arrest band as I call it) I'm experimenting also, I just thought I'd ask.

  • If's fine to continue cooking the foods you love, just be mindful of serving sizes and adjust them accordingly. I found that if I wanted rice, I did better with brown rice instead of white, and a little less than my carb limit - for example, I was allowed 30g of carbs at dinner, but I could only do about 20g of carbs for brown rice. Corn tortillas over flour, balance everything with protein, and as PP pointed out, watch for sugar in sauces. Also try to make sure you're getting fiber in, veggies are great for that, and it will help slow the rise of your blood sugar as well as keep you feeling fuller.

GD is hard, and it's pretty much trial and error to find what works for you. Within a couple of weeks it will be more routine and you'll hopefully feel a bit better about controlling it.

  • we are tons of mexican food when I had GD. I bet half of the dinners I ate were taco meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa and onions in one large flour tortilla. Nachos (beef, cheese, salsa, corn chips) were OK too.

limit carbs and make sure to have lots of protein.

  • I've been eating a ton of Mexican food with GD. I just make sure I pick only one type of carb per meal. Like I'll have tortillas with choriqueao then no carbs with my meal (or very little). I've actually had very good numbers with Mexican food. I've also had decent numbers with Italian. I just make sure to eat a couple meatballs with stuffed shells or lasagna with meat and a side salad.

  • There are low carb wheat tortillas. My score is generally pretty low after eating those. Also fajitas or fajita salads. Just really need to avoid rice, tamales and anything fried. For some reason I've been ok with black or pinto beans (starchy carbs) but if I have even a tbsp of rice my score is super high. Good luck!!
