Hikers

So we like to hike, I usually wear ds2 on my back in the boba and dh wears ds1 on his back in a Kelty we've borrowed from a friend.
So my question is, does anyone have a Kelty? We are trying to decide if we want to buy one. What age have you used it up to?
And, at what age do you think kids can start doing the hike walking? (Ds1 will be 3 in October)

Re: Hikers

  • We hike everyday, we live right on the costal trail. When DS was small I used the Moby, now I use the ergo, I usually put him on my back now. I don't know what a Kelty is, I should look that up. I also have no idea when he is old enough to hike on his own, I guess I will see what to do as I go.

And we've hit reason # 538,764 why I'm super jealous of where Spruce lives. We do the ergo but are thinking of something more hiker-ie. I haven't explored enough to know how much we'd use it here. And we need a car to be able to leave the city first. But we used to be avid hikers.

Oh and I think I'd do a bit of letting him walk on the more even terrain now. He isn't so into picking stuff up and eating it as he was. By three I'd think he could handle a mile on foot. But again, on beginner terrain.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • We borrowed the Kelty from a friend, and are totally confiscating it. Granted, we haven't tried anything else, but it is comfortable for DH to wear (I have not yet) and DS loves it. He even fell asleep in it the other day.

  • DD is almost three and can handle moderate hikes up to 2 miles with lots of stops because she's easily distracted. I am done hiking with the ergo and getting a deuter via craigslist. I'd like to get two so we can go on longer hikes and stow dd when she's tired.
