Severing parental rights

I know this isnt an easy process and its nothing I'm planning on very soon but...

I have a horrible fear of something happening to me and then my XH will gain custody of my LO and she will never know her family. My XH hasnt seen LO in over a year and just occasionally pays child support. Ive mentioned the idea to him in the past and he was open to it. He lives across the country and my family has helped me in raising my LO from almost day 1. I know Im not in a position to where its legally possible but I would like it to happen within the next few years.

Does anyone has experience with this?
