Babies: 6 - 9 Months

only happy when i'm standing up with him...at my wits end!

I realllly hope this is just a stage!  Has anyone had their LO do this...where they are ONLY happy when you are standing up holding them?  my almost 8 month old has been doing this for days now.  He is typically a relative happy/content baby.  But lately, he just whines and fusses all day long.  He is not happy in any equipment (jumpy, bouncy, high chair, whatever), he is not happy sitting on the floor playing.  I pick him up he is fine and dandy.  I sit down with him (still holding him), he cries hysterically.  I stand up, he stops.  I sit down with him, he screams.

He isn't hungry, his diaper is dry, he isn't sleepy (when he is, I lay him down), he seems to feel fine as far as I know, I've checked everything I could check.  I've given him diff things for teething just in case.  I just don't know!  If he really didn't feel good then I would think he would whine whether I was standing up or sitting down.  Its like he suddenly became the most high maintenance non-content baby ever.

  • Oh gosh this sounds EXACTLY like my LO. He is 8 months and started doing this about a month ago. He did this until his first tooth came in and he had an ear infection at the same time. After the ear infection resolved and the tooth broke through we got a week break from this behavior. He is doing it again and no signs of tooth two or infection. So I don't think that is contributing to it. But I feel like it could be gas related. He screams when I put him down he screams if I sit down with him. So I have to stand or walk around. I am at my wits end too! He has never been like this and it's hard to take him into stores now. He just started crawling. How is yours sleeping at night? I really don't gave any advice but you're not the only one going through this!

  • At least I know I am not alone!!  He has his 2 bottom teeth that have been broken through for over a month now and I don't see any new ones coming in either.  I can't go anywhere like the store or a restaurant right now.  The last 2 weekends we had birthday parties and I couldn't even sit at those :-(

He is USUALLY an excellent sleeper and is a breeze to put down, we could lay him down awake and he would never cry, etc.  But the past 2 weeks, he suddenly screams bloody murder every time we put him down.

He hasn't had gas issues since he was a newborn, but the other night when he woke up screaming he did seem to have gas issues and I was thinking it was something he ate that day.  He is JUST now starting diff solid foods so I wonder if that is the issue here that he is not taking to solids well and they are causing gas.  I am going to have to start tracking that to see if what he is eating could be causing gas issues.

  • Try wearing him - at least that way you could go for a walk or get some stuff done!
  • My 10 month old is doing this as well.  I don't get it but I never though of gas. She is driving me nuts.  I have a very bad back and I can't hold her for too long or I am in physical pain.

  • My 7 month has gotten better about this, but she has pretty much always been the same way.  We joke about it and pass her around because she will NOT let you sit down if you are holding her!  For her it's not because of gas or teething or anything, it's just her preference.  It can be difficult, but she's started to enjoy her jumper and activity center as well.  Only when she's in the mood for them though... good luck, it will get better.
